Health Insurance

Every student must have a sufficient health insurance and present proof of this insurance upon enrolment. Monthly insurance contributions are set by legislation. At the moment students must contribute 64,77 € for public health insurance and about 11,64 € for nursing care insurance. In sum, about 78 € must be paid to the health insurance fund per month.

The mandatory public health insurance must be paid until the end of the 14th semester or until the 30st birthday. Under special circumstances this insurance can be extended to a higher age.

The rates for this public health insurance are higher than 78 €. Therefore students over the age of 30 or the 14th semester may consider obtaining a private health insurance. Before you take out a private insurance please get information about the rates, the services and the conditions of different companies. Please make sure that you take out a "anerkannte private Krankenvollversicherung für Studenten" (recognised private full health insurance for students) and that the policy is in accordance with the residence law.
If in doubt please contact the Auslandsreferat or the Studentenwerk.

Please be aware that private health insurance ma become more expensive after you finisch your studies and that then you can only return to the public health insurance if you find a regular job (sozialversicherungspflichtige Beschäftigung). If you plan to stay in Germany after your graduation please keep this in mind when you decide about your health insurance.

The Studentenwerk (Student Union) has signed a contract with a private health insurance company about sufficient health insurance for foreign students who are older than 30.
