Intensive German Courses
The intensive courses are offered at six levels. Beginners (level A1) can get to the DSH/TestDaF exams (level C1.2) in six steps within one year. DSH or TestDaF is required for most courses of study at German universities. The courses are mainly intended for prospective students, but exchange students, guest lecturers and their family memberscan also particiate.Entrance is possible on every level. DSH Repeater Course
Those who have already taken the DSH exam in Gießen but did not achieve the result required for studying at the JLU or the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen - University of Applied Sciences (“DSH-2“), may participate in a German course during the semester to participate for the next DSH exam. The course consists of approx. 260 teaching hours (20 hours/week).International Summer Course (ISC)
The ISC always takes place in September. Within the four weeks (approx. 95 teaching hours) language course the participants get an intensive training in grammar, regional and cultural studies, text production and communication. Student mentors assist the participants. Therefore, they will not only get to know the University and the THM, but also the city and the surrounding areas. The ISC also includes excursions, for example to Frankfurt and Heidelberg. Furthermore, workshops are offered in the following topics: film, journalism, drama, dancing and cooking. The participants receive a certificate including ECTS credits.The course costs € 600,- (for Sokrates/Erasmus students and students from partner universities of the JLU and the FH Gießen-Friedberg: € 400,-).
Evening Courses for Guest Students
Evening courses (4 hours/week) at different levels are offered for exchange students (Sokrates, Erasmus, ISEP etc.), guest lecturers and their family members. The courses take place during the semester usually Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6.15-7.45 pm.Exchange students can participate free of charge. Guest lecturers and their family members pay € 100,- in the winter semester and € 90,- in the summer semester.
Project Days
Project Days are held on two Saturdays duringt the semester. They are open to foreign students and employees. The one-day courses focus on different topics like regional and cultural studies, academic writing and conversations. The Project Day covers 6 teaching hours and costs approx. € 10,-.Self-Study
The Language Learning Centre (Referat Fremdsprachen at JLU) offers a wide range of self-study materials, like books CDs or DVDs. It also arranges for language learning partners (Tandem).Referat für Fremdsprachen
