Short Description
Special issues concerning small an medium-sized enterprises
Learning Objectives

The main aim of this course is to enhance the students‘ understanding of special issues which concern small and
medium-sized enterprises (e.g. the importance of developing new ideas or strategies for reducing the rate of
absenteeism). In addition, students will become aware of the special problems and opportunities connected with SMEs
and gain some insight into areas which might prove promising for the further development of such companies.

Contents

Qualitative and. quantitative features of small and medium-sized enterprises. The importance of such enterprises for the
economy as a whole. Basic features of the law governing such companies and the importance of this law for SMEs.
Codetermination and its effects on the running of such enterprises. Introduction to idea management and the importance
of exploiting the creativity of staff members. Garnishment of wages from the point of view of the employer. Reducing nonwage
costs by applying strategies to minimise the number of working days lost through absenteeism and illness.
Information management in SMEs. Special advantages of using cooperations and networks. Typical success potential of
medium-sized companies. Chances and risks associated with internationalisation. Finding a successor. Innovation
management in medium-sized companies.
