Do you want to do more than just skim texts, but truly understand and retain what you've read? Then try the SQ3R strategy. It's a reading strategy for academic texts.

SQ3R stands for:

  • Survey (to gain an overview)

  • Question (formulating questions)

  • Read

  • Recite (Hold on)

  • Review

And here's how it works:

  1. skim the text: headings, blurb, abstract, introduction and preface, tables and illustrations.

  2. Ask questions : What information do you want to gain from the text? Use the "W" questions (who, what, when, where, why) to help you.

  3. Read and search specifically for answers to your questions.

  4. Note down: Write down the answers to your questions and the main points of the text.

  5. Review the text sections that are relevant to you and check your notes.

The SQ3R strategy is particularly useful when evaluating specialist literature for term papers and theses.

These and other writing and reading strategies can be found in our bibTutorial.

During their studies, students write various types of documents, including reports, term papers, proposals, bachelor's theses, and master's theses. How should these types of texts be structured? What characterizes them, and what distinguishes them?

"Reading for Genre" helps answer these questions. With "Reading for Genre," you review several texts of the same genre, meaning the same type of text, such as a bachelor's thesis.

While reading, pay particular attention to the purpose, function, content, language, structure, and design of the text. This will give you an impression of this text type.

Would you like to look at old bachelor's and master's theses to get an impression of the text type?

Use this to search for bachelor's and master's theses...

You can use the table of contents in Word as a bookmark in your interactive PDF document.

The prerequisite is that you insert a custom table of contents via the "References" tab and select the checkbox for "Links instead of page numbers".

Next, save the Word file as a PDF. To do this, in Word, select "File > Save As" and choose the "PDF" file type. The PDF function is also available as a printer option via the "Print" command in the same tab.

The bookmarks in your PDF document are now ready for use. They allow you to jump from one outline point to another within the document.

We will show you further tips on how to effectively prepare your Word document for academic writing in the course Fit for Word .

For Shibboleth access, please use the link via DBIS under "External Access".
