Tips for searching in THMfind
General
The search results are sorted by relevance to your entered search terms. For the catalog, results are considered more relevant if they appear in the title and/or author than if they appear in the publisher or synopsis. If your search does not return the desired results, please modify your search query.
You can reorder the search results: by date (descending), by date (ascending); in the catalog also by author and title.
You can also narrow down the list of results using various filters such as publication type, language and year of publication.
Selection of search terms
You can search using any number of keywords. However, your search results will be more precise if you only use meaningful terms. Articles, prepositions, and similar elements are not necessary.
Example
Enter the following in the simple search bar:
(1) The development of the healthcare system in Germany = 2740 hits
(2) Development of the healthcare sector in Germany = 125 hits
Search operators
You can combine multiple search terms using Boolean operators .
The following operators can be used and are processed in the specified order. This order can be altered by using parentheses.
- NOT (or -): Placing NOT before a search term excludes results containing that word. You can achieve the same result by placing a hyphen (-) directly before a word.
- AND (or +): You will only receive results containing the combined search terms. AND is the default operator and does not need to be entered unless parentheses are used. A space is then considered equivalent. However, as soon as you use parentheses, a space is no longer recognized as AND. It is therefore important to spell out the search operators when working with parentheses. Alternatively, you can also place a "+" directly before the search term.
- OR: You will only receive results that contain one of the entered search terms.
ATTENTION: Operators must be written in uppercase and in English. When using the +/- symbols, a plus or minus sign must precede each search term. Spaces must not be inserted between the operator and the following term.
Example:
Healthcare AND development NOT global
+Healthcare +Development - global
Only in "and more" can you also use the space operators N or W between search terms, which specify how many other words may appear between the search terms, e.g. .:
N2: There can be a maximum of two words between the two search terms; the order of the search terms does not matter
W4: There may be a maximum of four words between the two search terms, and the search terms must be in the specified order
Search with wildcards
Use "?" as a placeholder for exactly one character in your search term.
Example:
Organi?ation = found is Organisation and Organization
Use "*" as a wildcard for multiple characters in your search term.
Example:
Manage* = search results for Management, manage, Manager and others
Phrase search
To search for an exact phrase or title, enclose your search terms in quotation marks. To search for an author, use "Last name, First name".
Advanced Search
In the "Catalog" or "and more" sections, you can access a search form via the advanced search function, where you can enter your search terms into predefined search fields. You can also refine your search results, e.g. example, by language or publication year.
