Persistent Identifier
"A Persistent Identifier (PID) is a unique identifier (reference) of a digital resource (e.g., journal articles or research data ) by assigning a code that can be permanently and uniquely referenced on the internet."

Persistent identifiers play a central role in scientific publishing because they make scientific works, people or institutions uniquely and permanently identifiable, findable and referenceable.
There are numerous persistent identifiers with different objectives, some of which are described below as examples.
