The current Copyright Knowledge Society Act came into force on March 1st, 2018.

The handout " Copyright in Science " of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) with the participation of the German Library Association e. V. provides orientation on how copyrighted works can be used for teaching and research in higher education.

Here is an overview of the most important changes and content:

Scientific research (UrhWissG § 60c)

• Up to 75 percent of a work may be reproduced for one's own scientific research.
• For the purpose of non-commercial scientific research, up to 15 percent of a work may be reproduced, distributed and made publicly accessible.
• Illustrations, articles from specialist journals and scientific journals, works of a small extent can be used in their entirety.
• It is clearly regulated that "images" are works of "small size" that may be made accessible.
  How extensive a work may be so that it is still considered a small-scale work has already been the subject of general agreements between collecting societies and users; This specification can be used: - 25 pages for printed works
  - 6 pages for sheet music
  - 5 minutes for films
  - 5 minutes for music
