In later parts of one’s life, there will perhaps never be quite an opportunity like during one's studies to gather professional experience in such a comfortable and affordable fashion.
Now that I’ve successfully completed my three-month-long internship abroad, I can draw a very positive conclusion, personally speaking. The experiences I’ve gathered broadened my horizon and I learned a lot. Naturally, my primary reasons to go abroad were to improve my language skills, gather professional working experience and learn about the US culture and lifestyle. I succeeded in all three aspects in a more than satisfying fashion, and I’m happy that I made this decision last year.
This is why I’d recommend an internship abroad to everybody. Since one does not only collect one’s – perhaps first – professional working experience in the industries related to electrical engineering, but also life experience which I’m happy that I did not miss out on in retrospect.
Furthermore, an internship, an international internship in particular does significantly enhance one’s CV. Whereas, in principle, it does not matter in which country one gains his professional training. My personal choice was the US since I think it is an incredibly interesting and important country. Additionally, my internship period just so happened to coincide with the presidential elections – which made things all the more interesting.
In conclusion, all I can say is that it was the right decision in my personal opinion, and I wholeheartedly recommend this experience to anyone interested. Especially the period during which one studies at university is an ideal opportunity to gather experience abroad. In later parts of one’s life, there will perhaps never be quite an opportunity like this to gather professional experience in such a comfortable and affordable fashion.
When planning a stay abroad, self-initiative and organizational skills are required.
