Information and Communication Technology

Information and communication technology is a key technology that is becoming increasingly important in virtually all technical fields, such as Industry 4.0, smart grids, the automotive sector, and the digitization of business processes. In this context, new technical approaches in the fields of the Internet of Things, 5G mobile communications, artificial intelligence, cloud platforms, and data security offer a wide range of opportunities to drive forward and rethink the digitalization of the economy.

The Information and Communication Technology Working Group at the EI Department addresses these issues through research, teaching, and industry projects with the following technical focuses:

  • Mobile communications: 4G/5G, LPWAN technologies: LoRaWAN, NB-IoT, LTE-M
  • Internet of Things: network interfaces, protocols, and IT security
  • Cloud technologies with methods for isolating, orchestrating, and scaling cloud applications and services using VMs, containers, Docker, and Kubernetes
  • Network technology and protocols

Members of the research group have the opportunity to pursue a Ph.D. at the University of Jaén, Spain. The research group includes the “Internet of Things and Wireless Access Technology” laboratory in A21.2.08 and the “Computer Networks and Communication Systems” laboratory in A21.2.06.

Students can collaborate on research projects in these labs as part of their term papers and theses, gaining insights into current ICT topics. In doing so, they deepen their knowledge from the corresponding courses and acquire important skills in working with cloud platforms, IT security, or IoT wireless systems, which are currently in high demand in industry.
