Is my school knowledge sufficient for university studies?
A solid foundation in science and mathematics is essential for a successful start to your studies – especially in engineering. However, good math skills are also required in many other degree programs.
To support your start to your studies, THM offers one-week bridging courses in chemistry, mathematics, physics, and programming before the start of lectures.

When and where do the bridging courses take place?
Please note: The bridging course in mathematics takes place on several dates. The same content is covered on all dates. Therefore, please choose a week that suits you.

Online and in-person bridging courses with identical content are offered.
- We recommend the in-person courses because they offer an even better opportunity to get to know your future fellow students and the THM facilities.
- If you are unable to attend the bridging courses in Gießen or Friedberg, for example because you do not yet have accommodation there, the online bridging courses are a good way to prepare for your studies in terms of content.
- Regardless of their place of study, first-year students can participate in all bridging courses at the various THM locations.
If you have registered for bridging courses, you will receive an email with all further details (room information, online access, etc.) by the weekend before the course begins.
Expected course times: daily from 9:00 am to approximately 4:00 pm (including breaks).

What exactly do I do in the bridging courses?
Bridging course in programming
The course provides an introduction to programming in Java and is aimed at students who have little or no programming experience and are enrolled in a course of study where programming skills are important.
We will introduce you to the operation of a computer and show you how to create and run simple programs. The focus is on an initial introduction to algorithmic thinking, which is essential for programming, and the development of practical skills in using a computer. During the course, you will have the opportunity to try out what you have learned on the university's computers.
Bridging course mathematics
The necessary skills for starting a mathematics degree are summarized in the minimum requirements catalog for mathematics
This basic mathematical knowledge is repeated because it is required from the beginning of studies in all technical, mathematical-scientific and economic degree programs.
Topics: Numbers, quantities - brackets, fractions - proportionality, percentages - equations, powers, roots - trigonometry. Examples are discussed and more in-depth practice problems are worked through.
Bridging course in physics
The fundamental physics knowledge required for all technical and scientific degree programs is reviewed and, if necessary, relearned. Exemplary physics-based problem-solving strategies are developed and then concretized, tested, and reinforced through practice problems.
Topics: (SI) units, uniform and accelerated motion, free fall, projectile motion, forces, work, energy, power, oscillations, electricity, thermodynamics.
Bridging course Chemistry
Understanding Chemistry from the Beginning: This course systematically summarizes the school knowledge we assume for starting a degree in science or engineering. Practice exercises help you assess your understanding and improve. Learn to understand the fundamental experiments and observations that shape our modern worldview.
How do I register? How much does it cost?
Participation in the bridging courses requires a binding registration in the registration portal.
If you don't yet have a THM account (i.e., a THM email address), you can create a guest account at the bottom of the registration page. To do this, click on "Don't have a login yet?" and fill out the form. Afterwards, you will need to create a profile and add your personal information. Then you can log in and will receive a confirmation email to download.
The registration deadline is always half a week (i.e., Wednesday) before the course begins. Regardless of their study location, first-year students can participate in all bridging courses offered at the various THM locations.
Participation in the bridging courses is free of charge.
