STEP stands for Study Introduction Program . STEP encompasses various activities for Bachelor's degree programs (information sessions, mentoring, advising services) that precede the official start of lectures. Further information can be found on the STEP subpage .

STEP mentors are students from higher semesters who accompany and support first-year Bachelor students at the beginning of their studies.

You should definitely participate in STEP for Bachelor's degree programs, as you will receive important information during this first week to help you settle in well at THM.

If you are unable to attend, please contact the InfoCenter. Here you will receive essential initial information about starting your studies and the contact details of the relevant people in your department.

You can participate in STEP even if registration is not yet complete or you have not yet received your THM chip card. Please check the STEP website or the InfoCenter.

As a Master's student, you are welcome to participate in STEP events. For example, you can learn about the central departments at the Campus Meet & Greet or get to know Gießen or Friedberg during the pub crawl.

Since STEP is primarily aimed at students in bachelor's degree programs, you will not be assigned to a mentoring group, for example. The InfoCenter at your location will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

When you pick up your chip card at the InfoCenter, your semester ticket will be printed on the card. In subsequent semesters, you can update your ticket at one of the update terminals

On the Gießen campus, the terminals are located in the InfoCenter and in buildings A10, room 0.07 and A13, foyer. 

At the Friedberg campus you will find the terminals in the InfoCenter and in buildings A2, A4 and A7.

After a one-time initialization at the initialization terminal, the THM chip card can be used to pay at the cafeteria tills. You can top up your chip card balance with banknotes at the student union's top-up terminals or with a debit card at the cafeteria till. Further information about payment options in the cafeterias can be found on the student union's website.

The semester ticket is valid throughout the entire RMV network area, as well as in the transitional fare zones to the North Hessian Transport Association (NVV) and the Rhine-Neckar Transport Association (VRN). Detailed information and an overview of the fare zones can be found on the RMV website.

To activate your THM account, first download the initial password as a PDF. Use the initial password and your student ID number to activate your account on the IT Service website. After you have filled out and submitted the form provided there, your user ID and THM email address will be generated. Be sure to note this information down.

Please also set up password self-management so that you can set a new password yourself if you forget your login details.

In the e-campus , under "My Studies > Student Services > Certificates/Notifications tab," you will find a PDF containing your initial password. This download is only available during your first semester .

Your THM user ID consists of four letters and two numbers and is automatically generated when you activate your THM account. It serves as your login name for THM IT services. Your user ID will remain the same throughout your studies.

When you activate your THM account, your THM email address will be assigned to you. 

You can manage your THM email account on the THM Webmail website or in the Campus App . Important information from your department will be sent exclusively to your THM email address and not to your private email address

If you need a new password, you can reset it in person at the InfoCenter upon presentation of an identity card or passport. If you are unable to appear in person, it can be sent by mail to the address on file with the Student Services Office.

No. The TAN procedure for exam registrations will be discontinued from the summer semester of 2026. You will still find a TAN list on the e-campus, but it will no longer be needed.

You can download your enrollment certificate from the e-campus platform. Under Student Services > Certificates/Notifications, click the "General" button. There you will find all certificates available for download.

At THM, you have access to the "eduroam" Wi-Fi network, which provides free internet access at all participating institutions worldwide (such as universities). Once you have set a network password, you can connect your personal devices to the network. Instructions can be found on the Wi-Fi information page.

To connect to the THM Wi-Fi network, you need a network password. You can set this yourself on the IT service website . 

Attention! This is not your THM account password. 

Moodle is a web-based learning platform where students and instructors can collaboratively upload, edit, comment on, and discuss materials. This learning platform is used by many departments as a communication tool.

Yes, you can find the extensive range of software for students on the IT service website. 

On the STEP subpage you will find the assignment of the study programs to the different subject areas.

A lecture hour typically lasts 90 minutes. However, break times vary from campus to campus.

A semester always lasts six months: the summer semester from April 1st to September 30th and the winter semester from October 1st to March 31st. Each semester is divided into lecture periods, examination periods, and lecture-free periods ("semester breaks"). A detailed calendar is available for download on the THM website

The examination regulations contain all the legal foundations of a degree program. They list, for example, admission requirements, necessary internships and examination requirements, but also details on assessment criteria and degrees.

The student services organization offers affordable rooms and apartments for students in Gießen and Friedberg. Further information – including details on how to apply for a dorm room – can be found on the student services organization's website.

Rooms and apartments from private providers can be found on the internet or in local newspapers (e.g. Gießener Anzeiger, Gießener Allgemeine, Wetterauer Zeitung) or on the AStA website.

There are many ways to finance your studies, but the solutions are always individual. Generally, you can work alongside your studies or, depending on your parents' income, receive BAföG (federal student aid). You also have the option of applying for a scholarship . Contact the student advisory service or the student services organizationfor detailed advice.

Many students do not take advantage of the opportunity to apply for a scholarship. Detailed information can be found in the scholarship corner in Gießen (Building A10, cafeteria) and in Friedberg (Building A3, ground floor), as well as in a personal consultation with the student advisory service or the student services organization , and on the THM website.

We generally ask you to use public transport. 

Friedberg Campus: Finding a parking space is usually not a problem. You can open the barriers for student parking spaces with your chip card, and parking permits for street parking are issued by the InfoCenter.

Gießen Campus: Parking spaces are very limited! The barriers to the parking garage on Ringallee can be opened with a chip card. 

In Giessen, you can borrow bicycles free of charge from the provider "Nextbike" under certain conditions. To do this, you link your THM account in the external app. The AStA (General Student Committee) is currently working on setting up a similar bicycle rental system for students in Friedberg.
