Centre of Competence for Optical Technology and Systems (OTS)

The Centre of Competence for Optical Technology and Systems (OTS) brings together all the research and development work in the areas of optics and optical technologies in the departments of Information Technology-Electrical Engineering (IEM) and Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Data Processing (MND). The Optics Center in Wetzlar also conducts application-oriented research on optical technologies together with cooperating regional optics companies.

The optical measurement technology and sensors developed here are used, among other things, in monitoring automated manufacturing processes in Industry 4.0.

Additive manufacturing of metallic components with high structural resolution using the LPBF (laser powder bed fusion) process meets the strict precision and surface quality requirements of optical elements.

Key areas of research

  • Optical measurement technology: Surface analysis, wave fronts, X-ray cameras, robust sensors for IoT
