Kurzbeschreibung

Acquiring and improving competences for a better understanding of and better ways of dealing with people with a different cultural background.

Inhalte

Culture, values and identity.

Theoretical models to describe intercultural differences (eg cultural dimensions, cultural standards).

Stereotypes of the German culture.

Common sources of intercultural conflicts.

Analysis of critical incidents and reflecting own experiences.

Principles of intercultural communication (verbal and non-verbal communication).

Strategies and communicative methods to deal with intercultural diversity.

Qualifikations- und Lernziele

On successful completion of this module students are able to:

  • analyze complex intercultural situations and generate and apply a set of tools for intercultural encounters
  • reflect and improve their cultural awareness
  • transfer the learned strategies to work situations abroad and use them successfully
Fachkompetenzen
• describe and analyze intercultural differences in a non-judgmental way using theoretical models (e.g. cultural dimensions, cultural standards)
• describe and apply principles and concepts of intercultural communication (verbal and non-verbal communication)
• critically analyze the consideration and reflection of cultural differences in the business world (e.g. analysis and comparison of Websites, Commercials, etc. in different international markets)
Methodenkompetenzen (fachlich & überfachlich)
generate a set of tools for intercultural encounters
research, develop and present theoretical concepts of intercultural management (e.g. cultural dimensions)
Sozialkompetenzen
• describe differences and commonalities between themselves and culturally different others, working in an intercultural group of stu-dents
• ask complex questions about other cultures, seek out and articu-late answers to these questions that reflect multiple cultural per-spectives
• select and implement behavior that is effective and appropriate in an intercultural context; can elaborate and illustrate this behavior using case studies
• are aware of cultural differences and can suspend judgement when encountering culturally ambiguous situations
• view and interpret the world from other cultures’ point of view, discuss and identify one’s own
• value cultural diversity and other ways of thinking and describe cultural differences
Selbstkompetenzen
• reflect and articulate how one’s own culture has shaped one’s identity and world view
• analyze critical incidents and reflect own experiences and learned strategies
• experience other worldviews as viable solutions to similar prob-lems
• make cultural generalizations instead of stereotyping
• articulate acceptance that basic values and beliefs of other cul-tures include both differences and commonalities from their own culture
• exemplify and present (e.g. in role plays) that they are aware of the self as a cultural being and having in-depth understanding of the multi-cultural

Prüfungsleistungen

2 case study presentations (10-15 minutes each) andseminar paper 6-8 pages or presentation including handout (20 minutes). (Together 100%).

Benotung
Die Bewertung des Moduls erfolgt gemäß §§ 9, ggf. 12 (Teilleistungen), ggf. 18 (Arbeiten, Kolloquien) der Allgemeinen Bestimmungen (Teil I der Prüfungsordnung).
Verwendbarkeit
Gemäß § 5 der Allgemeinen Bestimmungen (Teil I der Prüfungsordnung) Verwendbarkeit in allen Bachelorstudiengänge der THM möglich.
