Short Description

The module introduces to inorganic and organic chemistry. It imparts a basic understanding of the interconnection between chemistry and biology as well as special knowledge about the properties of molecules, their geometry and reactivity.

Learning Objectives

Students understand the interrelation of the disciplines of chemistry. They characterize chemical compounds, interpret the reaction behavior and assess the influence of the chemical environment at the same time, they estimate reaction rates and work out the energetic relation.

  • Matter, atomic structure and models, chemical bonds
  • Chemical reactions and stoichiometric calculation
  • Basics of thermodynamics and reaction kinetics
  • Hydrocarbons , important groups of substances and functional groups
  • Reaction types and - mechanisms
  • Stereoisomerism and molecular geometry
  • Practical training: acids, bases, buffer, titration, photometry, chromatography, ester synthesis, heat of reaction
