Short Description
Descriptive statistics, probability calculus
Learning Objectives

This module is designed to provide students with a basic understanding of the most important statistical methods
applicable to economic problems. These methods will be discussed as to their suitability and limitations. The
corresponding results will be interpreted. Participants will also be shown how to apply these methods themselves.

Contents

Description of frequency distribution with the help of frequency tables and curves as well as status and mean error. Use
of the Lorenz concentration measurement for describing income and market concentrations. Systematisation of
dimension and index figures, use of price and share indices, conversion from nominal to real quantities (price
adjustment). Measuring and quantifying the connection between two series of observations based on their respective
correlation as well as their linear and nonlinear regression. Introduction to probability calculus; concept of random
variables, probability function and distribution function. Application for special forms of distribution: binomial distribution,
Poisson distribution, hyper geometric distribution and normal distribution. Drawing statistical conclusions from spot-check
information using the parameter of the whole.
