Getting Started - offers students professional support and guidance in their individual course of study if the standard period of study is extended by two semesters.

Are you interested in challenging topics such as the energy transition, robotics, the Internet of Things, or embedded systems? Would you like to contribute to the sustainable transformation of our industrial society? But you have doubts about your ability to successfully complete a degree in electrical and information engineering?

Come to THM and choose Getting Started at the Department Electrical Engineering and Information Technology! Since 2017, you have been offered the opportunity for a more relaxed and supported start to your studies!

By spreading out the basic studies by two semesters, you can, for example, compensate for gaps in your prior subject knowledge or make up for missing practical experience. You will be supported in this through tutorials, personal advising, mentoring, supervised practical projects, and exam preparation.

Having more time alongside your studies allows you to better balance leisure and family responsibilities. Even if you rely on BAföG (German student financial aid) and need to work, Getting Started could be just what you're looking for. Two additional semesters eligible for BAföG funding allow you to study with less pressure.

Interview with two students

Felix Baum and Joscha Schmidt seem relaxed. "Passed all exams." The first semester could have gone worse.

The two are studying electrical and information engineering in Giessen , but in a variant offered by THM since 2017. Called "GettING Started," this programme variant extends the first three semesters to five, meaning the entire bachelor's degree takes nine semesters instead of seven. This allows more time to focus on a successful start to their studies and achieving better grades.

What makes Getting Started so special: Students receive additional academic support in the form of tutorials, where they can regularly review lecture material and ask questions under the guidance of students in higher semesters. Furthermore, they are given extra preparation for exams through special learning units before the exams.

"What you would normally do at home, namely the preparation and follow-up, we do with the tutors in the supplementary courses," explains Joscha Schmidt. "And in a group of ten people, you can really learn something." The student laboratory "GET-LAB," in which students work on practical projects in teams and learn what they will need the theoretical foundations for, has also been well received.

"Highly recommended" is their unanimous verdict on GettING Started after the first semester. They're both certain they could have completed their studies in the conventional way, "but not as relaxed." "You don't have that initial stress," reports 21-year-old Joscha Schmidt. "I came from an apprenticeship as an electronics technician for industrial systems. With GettING Started, the transition to university is easier." Felix Baum started studying directly after completing his A-levels at the technical high school. "Math and physics are just difficult," is his argument for the reduced-pace study option. Besides, the 19-year-old adds pragmatically, "you simply have more free time.".
