New network format provided impetus for practical application

The event “Impulses for Practice: THM meets BVMW” launched a new networking format at the Friedberg campus, aiming to intensify the dialogue between regional academia and industry. This initiative, a collaboration between the Department of Business Administration and Engineering at the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (THM) and the German Association for Small and Medium-Sized Businesses (BVMW), brought together representatives from companies, the university, and the student body.

Gold and bronze for design students at THM

Another success for the Digital Media Systems (DMS) program at THM: Students specializing in media studies received multiple awards at the United Designs Alliance's (UDA) international "Poster Design 2026" competition. Two poster series were created in Prof. Dr. Nicholas Qyll's foundational course "Visual Communication," which the international jury recognized with gold and bronze awards.
The UDA is an international organization for communication design that promotes professional exchange between design practice and design education and organizes several competitions annually. At this year's Poster Design Award, two student projects from THMimpressed the judges.

The Vocational Training Center of Southern Hesse (bbw) and the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (THM) are deepening their successful cooperation for young IT professionals. With the signed cooperation agreement, both institutions reinforce their educational partnership, which uniquely combines theory and practice.

Building for the future with wood

Concrete, asphalt, and cement are among the major drivers of climate change in their production. Students from THMUniversity of Applied Sciences in Vorarlberg have explored how wood can be an alternative in building construction.
The excursion for students in the Degree Courses in Architecture and Civil Engineering was led by Prof. Cilia Tovar, Prof. Dr. Achim Vogelsberg, and Prof. Dr. Markus Blatt. The focus was on timber construction in its entirety – from the industrial production and processing of wood to planning and design, and finally to the realization of demanding building projects. During the trip through the Austrian province, the students gained diverse insights into the region's traditionally timber-based architectural and building culture. Guided tours, site visits, and expert discussions provided knowledge about production processes, current developments in wood processing, and innovative architectural and structural solutions in engineered timber construction.

Reliable water supply during hot weather

Following the great success of the first CampusDialog Energy at the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (THM), the public lecture series continues on Wednesday, July 15th. This time it will focus on the opportunities and risks of municipal energy and water supply.
The heat wave at the end of June prompted numerous municipalities across Germany to call for water conservation. While the heat has subsided, the crisis in Germany's water supply persists in many places. In the CampusDialog Energy, Lara Eicher and Anne-Sophie Patzig from the Marburg municipal utilities discuss resilient drinking water supply, using Marburg as an example.
The second lecture addresses a topic that seems far away given the heat, yet is all the more important in light of the crisis-ridden gas supply situation: Johannes Eckhardt from THM speaks about “Municipal heat supply: Opportunities and risks through transformation and municipal heat planning”.

International exchange strengthens research and teaching

How can universities worldwide learn from each other and jointly advance research? The first-ever International Research and Teaching Days, hosted by the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (THM), provided answers to this question. Around 30 scientists and university staff from eleven countries met in Giessen and Friedberg to exchange information on current research, innovative teaching concepts, and opportunities for international collaboration.
The English-language event week was jointly organized by the International Office (IO) and the Research and Young Academics (FN) department. It built upon the previous International Staff Week and expanded the format to include a focus on research. This supports THM 's strategy of further developing internationalization in research and teaching.

Partnership project as a model for municipalities in Uganda

Together with its twin city Mubende and the International University of East Africa (IUEA), the Giessen district hosted the first German-Ugandan biogas conference. The meeting in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, was supported by funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. The Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (THM) was also involved.

“PZI Get Together” strengthens networking

Exchange and networking were the focus of the "PZI Get Together" of the Doctoral Center for Engineering Sciences (PZI) at the Research Campus of Central Hessen (FCMH). Interested individuals, doctoral candidates, researchers, and alumni came together in the Forum Werkstattbühne at the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (THM) to engage in discussions and gain insights into career paths in academia.
Ivana Büttner, coordinator of the PZI, welcomed the guests: "The evening is intended to be a space for genuine exchange, personal conversations, and a pleasant get-together." The Doctoral Center for Engineering Sciences was founded in 2018 as a unique institution in Germany, spanning multiple universities and types of higher education institutions. Since 2019, THM has exercised its own right to award doctorates there. Currently, 78 researchers are pursuing doctorates in ten disciplines, supported by 71 professors. Since its founding, 33 doctoral degrees have been successfully completed.

60 years later: Mechanical engineering alumni visit THM

That fellow students can become lifelong companions is demonstrated by two alumni groups who returned to the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (THM) after six decades: The graduate groups of the 1966 cohorts of Mechanical Engineering ( Giessen ) and Mechanical Engineering Industrial Engineering (Friedberg) met again on the Giessen campus.
Ten mechanical engineering alumni gathered at THM to reminisce about their student days and gain insight into the university's development. After graduating, they pursued very different career paths: from working in industry and founding their own companies to holding leadership positions in international corporations, government offices, or the teaching profession. However, the focus was not on their professional achievements, but rather on their shared experiences from their studies.
