Mushrooms growing on carrot scraps can serve as a sustainable and tasty protein source. This is shown in a study by researchers from Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) and the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (THM): Vegan patties and sausages made with mushroom protein tasted better to the taste testers than products made from plant-based proteins.

More than 15,000 people pass by one of Friedberg's most prominent vacant properties every day, the "Bierbörse" (Beer Exchange) at the train station. For the city, it's been a long-standing concern; for an organic bakery, an obvious opportunity for expansion; and for students at the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (THM), a chance to put their theoretical knowledge into practice.
It all started with a phone call: Friedberg's mayor, Kjetil Dahlhaus, picked up the phone and invited Prof. Holger Rohn to a meeting with "biokaiser," a bakery committed to the common good and ecological principles. Rohn recognized the potential of revitalizing the beer exchange as a practical learning opportunity at the university. In several meetings between Rohn and Volker Schmidt-Sköries, managing director of "biokaiser," a concept was developed outlining how the city, students, and the company could all benefit from the branch.

The Hessian Higher Education Pact 2026-2031 will significantly change the framework for the state's universities. The Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (THM) also faces the task of critically reviewing its organization and consolidating its finances. The presidium has responded by submitting a proposal to the governing bodies aimed at securing the range of study programs while simultaneously strengthening the performance of the Departments .
“None of our proposals were made lightly,” emphasizes THMPresident Prof. Dr. Matthias Willems. “It is important for us to clarify: The planned changes are not an evaluation of the professional work of individual Departments .” Instead, the aim is to position the university in such a way that it can meet the cost-cutting requirements without making substantial cuts to the breadth of its offerings.

120 million euros for digital transformation at Hessian universities

Hesse's Minister of Science, Timon Gremmels, Minister for Digital Affairs, Prof. Dr. Kristina Sinemus, and the Hessian universities have signed the Hessian Digital Pact for Higher Education 2026-2031 ("Digital Pact 2.0"). Digital Pact 2.0 complements the Hessian Higher Education Pact 2026-2031. It builds on the successes and experiences of the first Digital Pact, which ran from 2020 to 2025. Over the next six years, €120 million will be invested in the digital transformation of Hessian universities.
Science Minister Timon Gremmels explains: “The Digital Pact 2.0 provides Hessian universities with a reliable financial basis for key digitization projects in research, teaching, the arts, and administration over the next six years. It builds on previous achievements and contributes to providing universities with the best possible support in their digital transformation. By transferring €10 million annually into the universities' core budgets, it secures existing structures and creates the conditions for permanent employment contracts. In doing so, and fully in line with the coalition agreement, we acknowledge the importance of digitization as a new, ongoing task for Hessian universities.”
