Manhole Cover Day: special infrastructure on campus

June 19th is Manhole Cover Day. The German Association for Water, Wastewater and Waste (DWA) initiated this day of action to raise awareness of the public, underground sewer network and the professions associated with it. On the THMcampus in Giessen , a special system is hidden beneath the manhole covers of building C10, which uses the wastewater to heat or cool the buildings of the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (THM).

Pathways to a PhD

Graduates are confronted with many questions before embarking on a doctorate: Is a doctorate right for me? How can I pursue a doctorate in Central Hesse? What do I need for a successful start to my doctoral studies? How do I finance my doctoral studies? What support do the universities in Giessen and Marburg offer me during my doctoral studies? To answer these and other questions, the information event "Pathways to a Doctorate" will take place on June 25, 2026. It will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the JLU main building (Ludwigstraße 23, Giessen ).
The event is hosted by the graduate centers GGS, GGK, GGL and GGN of JLU, the Research Campus of Central Hessen (FCMH), the initiative ArbeiterKind.de, the Marburg Research Academy (MARA) and the Department of Research and Young Academics of the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (THM).
For one afternoon, everything revolves around starting a doctoral program: from choosing a dissertation topic and supervisor, through possible funding options, to the services offered by graduate centers and ultimately, the best way to launch an academic career. The event is aimed at students from all disciplines, prospective doctoral candidates, and pre-doctoral researchers from all universities in Central Hesse, as well as students interested in a cooperative doctoral program, for example, between THM and JLU.
The afternoon begins with a presentation covering the most important topics related to doctoral studies. Afterwards, doctoral candidates from various disciplines will share their experiences and discuss their personal journeys and motivations for pursuing a doctorate. In an information lounge, participants will then have the opportunity to speak with representatives from the graduate centers, the FCMH, the ArbeiterKind.de initiative, MARA, and the Research and Young Academics department of THM .

Two "summa cum laude" awards for space research

The collaboration between Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) and the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (THM) within the framework of the DLR joint project AIPEX reaches a high point with two outstanding doctoral theses: Dr. Niklas Dormagen and Dr. Max Klein defended their dissertations with the highest grade “summa cum laude”.
Dormagen already embodied the close collaboration between JLU and THMduring his studies in the cooperative degree program "Physics and Technology for Space Applications." The program combines fundamental scientific principles with application-oriented engineering practice, thus exemplifying how the strengths of a university and a university of applied sciences can complement each other. Max Klein studied physics at JLU for both his bachelor's and master's degrees and contributed his university research expertise to the project.

A waiting list of interested exhibitors proves it: The Giessen Business Day (GUT), organized by the Department of Civil Engineering at THM of Applied Sciences, is a firmly established regional industry event in the calendars of construction companies, planning offices, associations, and public authorities. This year's event brought together more than 400 students and high school seniors with potential employers at 40 booths.

Young talents from Central Hesse start their studies with momentum

Those who support young people early on invest in ideas, research, and the future. With this in mind, the FIT Foundation and entrepreneur Dr. Wolfgang Lust are once again awarding two annual scholarships this year to particularly dedicated A-levels students from Central Hesse.
The scholarships are aimed at young people who have demonstrated excellent academic performance, a strong interest in scientific or technical subjects, and initiative. Both scholarships are worth €6,000 each and are intended to facilitate the transition to university studies.

Five future ideas win at the THMIdeaco

With a washing machine on stage, he immediately captured the audience's attention and ultimately convinced the jury: Under the dome of the former Art Nouveau bathhouse in Friedberg, computer scientist David Sayk presented his business idea "Buyes – Reviews without an expiration date" and secured victory and a prize of 2000 euros at this year's THMstart-up competition, Ideeco. A total of nine teams presented their concepts in the final.

At the "Jugend forscht" (Youth Researches) competition, Jannis Müller from the Lahntalschule Biedenkopf received the special prize for "Resource Efficiency and Circularity" at the national level. His project "Spectroscope – Is It All Just Light???" was awarded the prize, with the jury praising it as exemplary for resource conservation, repair, and reuse.
Müller participated in the regional competition in February, which is jointly organized annually by the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (THM) and the Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU). In the Giessen Congress Hall, he was one of 15 teams from Central Hesse that advanced to the state finals – from there, as one of the Hessian representatives, he went on to the national finals in Herzogenaurach.
