Every student should have one by the end of the year – the new chip card recently presented by the Giessen -Friedberg University of Applied Sciences. The plastic rectangle with a passport photo replaces the paper student ID. The card uses a multifunctional chip that enables contactless data transmission. The Hessian Ministry of Science has provided €300,000 from its "Higher Education and Science Program" for the rollout.

Andreas Heß has received the inaugural Innovation Prize from the Society for the Promotion of the Hospital Technology Management (KTM) degree program. The engineer, who studied KTM at the Giessen -Friedberg University of Applied Sciences, was awarded the €2,000 prize for his diploma thesis. In it, he examined the allocation of building operating costs in the calculation of diagnosis-related groups (DRGs), using a Hessian university hospital as a case study. Thorsten Tavernier received the second prize for his work on "Risk Management – Hazard Assessment in Hospitals.".

A hands-on approach is a tradition at the Department of Civil Engineering at the Giessen -Friedberg University of Applied Sciences. For example, the Hugo von Ritgen House in Giessen southern district was transformed into an attractive study center largely through the self-help efforts of faculty and students. Now, another "self-help project" can be admired in the courtyard of this Department building. Architecture and civil engineering students are enthusiastically working to renovate an old barracks for a new purpose.

An excursion led Prof. Dr. Joachim Breckow and Hans Hingmann, along with students from the Institute of Medical Physics and Radiation Protection, to Jáchymov in the Czech Republic. On the way there, the scientists from Giessen visited a radiometry seminar at the University of Regensburg. Breckow gave a lecture on the effects of radiation from radioactive substances at low doses.
