Controllers' Conference New developments in controlling were the focus of a weekend conference at the Department of Business at the Giessen -Friedberg University of Applied Sciences. Thirty professors and lecturers from universities of applied sciences across Germany accepted the invitation of Dean Prof. Dr. Horst-Dieter Geuting. The conference centered on key competencies, practical requirements for universities, and the potential applications of e-learning.

The fact that a conference on this subject attracted around two hundred interested participants was a pleasant surprise for the organizers at the Giessen -Friedberg University of Applied Sciences.

The Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health commissioned the project, which is led by occupational scientist Prof. Dr. Dieter Lorenz. The university and ABoVe GmbH, as project partners, prevailed against several competitors with their research concept.

FH President Dr. Wendler presents the certificate of appointment as honorary senator to Dr. Uwe SchäkelState Secretary Prof. Dr. Joachim-Felix Leonhard described the first honorary senator of the Giessen -Friedberg University of Applied Sciences as "the driving force behind a network of science and business in the Central Hesse region." Dr. Uwe Schäkel received this award in February for his achievements in developing the dual study program StudiumPlus.

At the appointment ceremony, FH President Prof. Dr. Dietrich Wendler:
“I am convinced that the Senate of the Giessenin you, Dr. has chosen the right recipient for the first-ever award of the title of Honorary Senator Giessen-Friedberg University of Applied Sciences, but also as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of StudiumPlus, I am familiar with the history of our innovative study model. One can speak of a model of success with complete conviction when qualification programs offer graduates excellent prospects in the job market, point the way to the future of education policy with their innovative design, and simultaneously give new impetus to regional economic development.
Supported by strong partners, StudiumPlus has achieved precisely these things in a short time and established itself impressively quickly. Today, four years after its launch, we have expanded the range of subjects to include three Degree Courses – Business Administration and Engineering, Business Administration, and Engineering/Microsystems Technology – and are continuing this expansion. We have graduated the first two cohorts with international academic degrees, and the number of students has increased to approximately…” The number of students has increased by 270, and a three-figure number of companies have been secured for binding cooperation between the university and the regional economy.

You were a founding member when the StudiumPlus support association was established on May 31, 2001, from which – after a remarkably efficient and professional development – ​​the current Competence Center for Dual Universities (CCD) has emerged, of which you have been Chairman of the Board from the very beginning.”

Other speakers at the ceremony included Friedhelm Loh, owner of the Friedhelm Loh Group (Haiger), Wetzlar's mayor Wolfram Dette and Prof. Dr. Harald Danne, the managing director of the Scientific Center for Dual University Studies, who expressed their appreciation to the honoree.


In Hesse, a network for researching microstructured optical fibers is being established with the support of the Ministry of Science and Art (HMWK). The Laboratory for Optical Communications Technology at the Giessen -Friedberg University of Applied Sciences is collaborating within this competence center on the further development of novel fibers.

Prof. Dr. Udo Jung has taken up his position at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, and Materials Technology at the Giessen -Friedberg University of Applied Sciences. At the Friedberg campus, his research focuses on areas including lightweight construction, design theory, and fatigue strength.

The Giessen -Friedberg University of Applied Sciences intends to continue fostering an entrepreneurial mindset among its students through its curriculum. Dr. Maria Rumpf, who held the endowed professorship for business start-ups for a five-year term, will now dedicate herself to this task permanently as a professor.

In the nationwide competition for research and development funding, the Giessen -Friedberg University of Applied Sciences has once again achieved success. The university will receive a total of €690,000 from the "Applied Research at Universities of Applied Sciences in Cooperation with Industry" program. The funding commitment from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) covers three proposed projects in the fields of materials technology, mobile communications, and control engineering.

Prof. Dr. Martin Sting has taken up his post at the Giessen -Friedberg University of Applied Sciences. His courses at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, and Materials Technology in Friedberg focus on machine parts, computer-aided design (CAD), and machine tools.
