A large red fire engine from the Friedberg fire department is parked on the campus of the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (THM). But there's no need to worry: it's not an emergency, but rather the Fire Department's Open Day. Under the motto "Blue Lights Meet Campus," the campus was transformed for a day into an activity area showcasing the work of the fire department.
Students, staff, and all interested parties had the opportunity to experience the fire department up close. The team presented their rescue and firefighting vehicle (HLF) in front of the cafeteria and provided insights into their work, equipment, operational techniques, and the daily life of a firefighter.
Particularly popular with the students was a hands-on station where they learned how to use a hollow jet nozzle for targeted firefighting. During an obstacle course, participants donned turnout gear, including helmets and breathing apparatus, and experienced firsthand how demanding the work of a firefighter is.
In addition to the practical exercises, the day also offered an opportunity for discussions and questions: The firefighters answered questions about special operations, training opportunities and the diverse possibilities for volunteering.
“Many students experienced firsthand today what goes into volunteering with the fire department,” summarized Inga Haus from the organizing team of the Friedberg “Campus Roundtable.” Fire Chief Mathias Henritzi concluded by emphasizing: “Everyone is welcome here. Anyone who wants to take on responsibility and become part of a community will find a place with us.”
