Where students and researchers usually experiment, around 30 children in white lab coats and safety goggles explored the laboratories of the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (THM). As part of the children's summer program, they spent a day of their summer vacation at THM.

At five experimental stations, children aged six to thirteen explored various scientific phenomena. The unique aspect: all the experiments, prepared and supervised by staff from the Department of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Computer Science (MNI), used household products such as vinegar, baking soda, and iodine.

Using carbon dioxide, the children inflated balloons or made raisins float to the surface in water. They separated salt and pepper, practiced using a pipette, and observed how the water level rose as oxygen was consumed. Brightly colored flames, a foam volcano made with dry ice, and the detection of starch using iodine tincture also generated great enthusiasm.

The experimental day at THM is part of the children's summer program, a company-organized holiday childcare program of regional companies, the Hessian Sports Youth, the city of Wetzlar and the Lahn-Dill Chamber of Industry and Commerce.

The THM 's family-friendly university actively participates in the program, contributing in particular with creative ideas on scientific topics. The program is aimed at children of THMstudents and staff.
