Success for the Friedberg motorsport team: At the international "MotoStudent" design competition in Alcañiz, Spain, the students from the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (THM) brought home the trophy for best design, prevailing against 32 international teams. They also scored points in other disciplines.
Over a period of 18 months, the students developed, designed, and built their own racing motorcycle – from the initial idea to the finished prototype. In doing so, they directly applied their theoretical knowledge from their studies to practical application: "The students learn to work in a team, find creative solutions, and independently master complex technical challenges – skills that are indispensable in engineering practice," emphasized project manager Pascal Jaeger.
MotoStudent is an international competition where student teams from universities race their self-developed racing motorcycles against each other. The judging criteria include not only performance on the track, but the entire engineering concept – from construction and technical implementation to presentation and design.
And it was precisely in these disciplines that the Friedberg team achieved the most points, thus securing first place. They also took first place in the categories "Drawings/CAD (Computer-aided Design)" and "Final Presentation," second place in "Best MS1 Overall," and third place in "Team Plan." This placed the team sixth overall in the competition.
The team for the season consisted of 25 students from all Departments at Friedberg University – from Mechanical Engineering to Business Administration and Engineering . They took on the roles of motorsport engineers and gained insights into topics such as vehicle technology, aerodynamics, electronics, 3D printing, and manufacturing technology. “Working in the motorsport lab fosters teamwork, creativity, and entrepreneurial thinking,” summarized student Luis Castillo Welter, a member of the motorsport team. “Success at MotoStudent is also the result of combining practical teaching, teamwork, and technical excellence,” added lab director Prof. Dr. Claus Breuer. The project offers students not only valuable insights into the practical aspects of engineering but also the opportunity to network within the industry. Often, working in the motorsport team serves as a springboard for a professional career.
