Whether logistics or programming, motorsport or virtual reality: The Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (THM) invited high school students to its Friedberg campus to explore its diverse and practical Degree Courses . The young people didn't just sit in lecture halls, but were able to explore laboratories in small groups, learn about student projects, and try things out for themselves.
Prior to the event, the students had chosen an area of interest and then received information about various Degree Courses offered in Friedberg. Options included, for example, technology and mechanics, physics and mobility, and computer science in media and business.
Around 160 students attended the Friedberg Information Days (FIT). They are currently enrolled in A-levels classes at grammar schools, vocational schools, and technical colleges in Oberursel, Wetzlar, Dillenburg, Altenstadt, Bad Homburg, and Butzbach. Many of them already had practical experience, for example, in soldering technical kits – either from school or in their free time. The FIT is organized by THM in cooperation with the State School Authority for the Hochtaunus and Wetterau districts.
The lecturers and staff of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics and Materials Technology, the Department of Information Technology, Electrical Engineering and Mechatronics, the Department of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Data Processing, the Department of Business Administration and Engineering , and the Department of Management and Communication participated. They first introduced the young people to the basics of university studies – how long a bachelor's degree takes, what prerequisites they must meet, and what specific courses of study are offered in their Department .
Afterwards, the students had the opportunity to explore the laboratories in small groups, ask staff and students questions, and gain their first practical experience. For example, some interested students built their own digital dice with Michael Großfeld in the robotics lab. They soldered LEDs and resistors onto specially prepared circuit boards. A programmed microcontroller then rolled numbers when everything was correctly assembled.
Prof. Dr. Leif Fornauf from the Department of Management and Communication involved groups of students in a logistics experiment. The young women and men were given different roles and simulated a logistics chain – from purchasing goods to production and sales.
