General
Hazardous materials officers advise and support the university management in specifying the duties arising in particular from the Hazardous Materials Ordinance, but also from other occupational health and safety regulations. In carrying out their duties, they report directly to the university management or the appointed officer.
The Hazardous Substances Ordinance requires expertise in the field of hazardous substances for conducting a risk assessment. If the university management does not possess the necessary expertise itself, appropriately qualified hazardous substances officers can be appointed.
As part of the implementation of the Hazardous Substances Ordinance, the appointment of a hazardous substances officer was recommended as early as 1989 by the Hessian Ministry of Science and Art. Therefore, the official title in Hesse is "Hazardous Substances Officer" and not "Hazardous Substances Representative".
