From 9 to 13 March, the THM Language Center is organizing the Blended Intensive Program (BIP) for the internationalization of language courses. This Blended Intensive Program (BIP) will explore various dimensions of internationalization in university-level language courses. Key questions include: What types of projects can be integrated into language courses to provide students with authentic opportunities for communication in an international context? And what learning outcomes can be expected from such projects, particularly with regard to language, intercultural, and collaborative competences?

The program will take the form of a thematic week, featuring a series of workshops, talks, and participant-led contributions. It will highlight the potential and diversity of internationalization in language education, with a focus on both pedagogical innovation and institutional practice.

Target group are primarily language teachers and teaching staff at university
language centers, as well as educational developers and specialists in
higher education teaching and learning who are involved in the planning and
conceptualization of courses.

Intercultural English Team Tasks (IETT) is a part of the collaborative initiative NIDIT (Network for Impactful Digital International Teaching-skills) founded by the Foundation for Innovation in Higher Education Teaching. A project team at the THM language center conducts IETT in cooperation with three partner universities from summer term of 2024 on: Izmir Institute of Technology (IZTECH, Turkey), BUILDERS Ecole d'Ingénieurs (Caen, France), and TTK University of Applied Sciences (Tallinn, Estonia).

Due to ongoing globalization trends and the steadily increasing use of English as a lingua franca in industry, business, trade, science, and research, efforts have been underway for the past twenty years in several linguistic research areas, particularly in applied linguistics, but also to some extent in English as a foreign language teaching, to redefine the role of pronunciation. This involves questioning traditional native-speaker models such as British and American Standard pronunciation and advocating for the legitimacy of non-native pronunciations. Many experts argue that imitating British or American pronunciation should no longer be desirable. Instead, the primary goal worldwide should be to be able to communicate in English.
