Evaluation of the relationship between prior schooling and academic success (ESUS)
- How do students from different types of schools cope with the demands of university studies?
- Does the school provide the necessary conditions for a successful transition?
- How can the university better accommodate the different educational pathways?
The Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (THM) has investigated these questions in a targeted and systematic manner in cooperation with six partner schools.
Idea - Initial situation
Schools and universities are increasingly challenged to make the transition between the two educational institutions more seamless, transparent, and effective.
On the university side, this requires knowledge of students' performance profiles and competencies, while on the school side, it requires an understanding of future study requirements. This mutual knowledge is only sporadic and is usually conveyed only through individual dialogue. Both sides lack systematic insights into success-critical variables and how to shape them.
Results
The study was designed as a panel study. A total of 334 study progress records of first-year students from three cohorts were examined. Through the study, the university and participating schools gained insights into how successful the transition to university studies is depending on the type of school.

cooperation
For the systematic study, the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen cooperated with six regional schools of different school types.
An expert panel of representatives from the cooperating schools accompanied the study. This close collaboration facilitated a discussion process involving
both sides of the institutions involved in the transition and ensured the direct transfer of results back to the participating schools.
