I volunteer in disaster relief, with the fire department, or with a recognized aid organization. What happens if a deployment conflicts with an exam or coursework?
THM expressly welcomes and appreciates the social commitment of its students.
If an examination or coursework cannot be undertaken due to an assignment, the general examination regulations regarding important reasons apply (§ 11 General provisions of the Bachelor's and Master's examination regulations).
Whether a valid reason exists is always examined on a case-by-case basis.
Do I need to provide proof of my participation?
Yes.
Please submit a written certificate of service or deployment from your organization. The certificate should document the type, date, and duration of the deployment.
Only certificates from officially recognized organizations that can issue the corresponding documentation will be accepted.
What applies to missions that are known in advance?
If deployments are already known or can be planned in advance, please inform your Department or the responsible inspectors as soon as possible and submit a corresponding service or deployment certificate.
Early communication makes it easier to examine possible solutions.
Am I automatically entitled to a make-up appointment?
No.
Decisions regarding withdrawals, extensions of deadlines, or possible make-up opportunities will be made on a case-by-case basis.
The decision is made by the responsible examination committee or the examiner within the framework of the applicable examination regulations and the existing scope of discretion.
Can I cancel an ongoing exam to go on a call?
Terminating an examination that has already begun for participation in a deployment is generally associated with risks under examination law.
If an ongoing examination is terminated, the responsible examination board decides on a case-by-case basis, in accordance with Section 11 of the General Provisions, whether there is a valid reason for withdrawal. If no such reason exists, the examination performance is deemed to be graded as "fail" in accordance with Section 11, Paragraph 6.
Students are therefore asked to ensure they have sufficient notice of their availability to their organization regarding known exam dates. Exams are a mandatory part of the course of study and should be appropriately considered when planning personal deployments. Where possible, deployments should be delegated to other available personnel.
During an ongoing examination, the organizational requirements of the examination supervisor must be observed. Leaving the examination room may have consequences under examination law and will be assessed according to the applicable examination regulations.
The decision as to whether an important impediment exists within the meaning of Section 11 of the General Provisions shall be made exclusively by the competent examination committee.
Will my voluntary work at THM be recognized?
Yes.
THM explicitly recognizes civic and social engagement. In many Degree Courses , such activities can be taken into account during studies, subject to the requirements of the respective examination regulations.
Further information can be obtained from your Department or the Central Examination Office.
