If you wish to begin your studies in a higher semester, an application is mandatory, regardless of whether the desired course of study is a restricted-admission (NC) or open-admission course.
Admission to a higher semester in a consecutive Master's programme or a dual study programme (StudiumPlus) also requires a prior application.
Admission to a consecutive Master's programme is only granted to those who have completed prior studies in at least one Master's programme and who meet the general admission requirements according to the examination regulations of the respective programme. Direct entry from a completed undergraduate degree into a higher semester of a Master's programme is not possible.
Below you will find general information about the application process:
Application deadlines
The following application deadlines apply for applications to a higher semester:
| semester | Application deadline |
| for a summer semester | 01.12. - 15.01. |
| for a winter semester | 01.06. - 15.07. |
The admission procedure
There are differences between the admission procedure for a restricted-admission degree programme (NC degree programme) and an open-admission degree programme, which are explained here.
admission-restricted Degree Courses
The Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen determines the number of available study places by calculating the difference between the set number of admissions and the number of enrolled students for a given semester. If the number of enrolled students exceeds the set number of admissions, no selection process takes place.
Available study places in higher semesters are allocated according to the following ranking:
- Change of study location
for applicants who are or were already enrolled in the same degree program. - Change of study program
for applicants who have already acquired study and examination credits in another study program and these credits can be recognized for the applied-for study program, thus leading to a "classification" in a higher semester.
Open-admission Degree Courses
Applicants who have applied for an open-admission degree program and have uploaded their complete application documents digitally as part of the online application process will generally receive an offer of admission. The letter of admission will then be made available for download (PDF document) THM application portal "E-Campus"
Information on changing your place of study
Applicants for a change of study location are individuals who wish to change their place of study and their studies in the same (i.e., the identical study program at THM in which they were previously enrolled) or a comparable study program at the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen .
A "content-wise comparable course of study" exists if it is a course of study with
- same name
- the same number of curricularly allocated credit points,
- same degree (Bachelor's or Master's - the degree titles BA, B.Sc., B.Eng. or MA, M.Sc., M.Eng. do not have to be identical.) and
- It is of the same structure (comparable course and structure, same target group).
Example 1:
You have been enrolled for four semesters at Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences in the "Computer Science / Bachelor" program (180 ECTS credits). Now you would like to continue your studies in the "Computer Science / Bachelor" program (180 ECTS credits) at the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen .
You are applying for admission to the 5th semester of this degree programme, as this results from the Further count of the semesters already completed at Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences.
Example 2:
You have been enrolled for 5 semesters at Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences in the "Business Administration / Bachelor" program (210 ECTS credits). Now you would like to continue your studies in the "Business Administration / Bachelor" program (ECTS credits) Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen
You are applying for admission to the 6th semester of this degree programme, as this results from the Further count of the semesters already completed at Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences.
Certificate of good standing:
For application to a higher semester as part of a "change of study location", it is necessary that you obtain a certificate of good standing from your previously attended university as proof and upload it in digital form (JPG or PDF format) as part of the online application.
Important!
Changing your place of study is not possible if you have definitively failed Further
Information on changing your course of study
Applicants for a change of study program are individuals who a different course within the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen or a different course at another university and are applying for admission to a higher semester.
An “other course of study” is present in an application.
- for a course of study with different names,
- for a course of study with a different number of curricularly planned credit points
- for a course of study with different degrees (Bachelor ≠ Master),
- for a study programme with a different structure (comparable course and structure, same target group)
Example 1:
You have been enrolled for four semesters at RheinMain University of Applied Sciences in the "Business Administration / Bachelor" program (180 ECTS credits). Now you would like to continue your studies at the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen in the "Business Administration / Bachelor" program (210 ECTS credits).
You are applying to change your degree programme because the two Degree Courses have different names and a different number of credit points. As part of the online application, you will upload your transcript of records. The relevant Department at the Giessen campus (in this case, Department of Business) will check whether your previously completed coursework can be credited. If credit transfer is possible, you will be placed in a higher semester, e.g., the second semester.
Example 2:
You have been enrolled for two semesters at the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen in the "Computer Science / Bachelor of Science" program (180 ECTS credits). Now you would like to continue your studies at the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen in the "Media Informatics / Bachelor of Science" program (180 ECTS credits).
You are applying to change your degree programme because the two Degree Courses have different names. As part of the online application, you will upload your transcript of records. Now you would like to continue your studies at the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen in the "Architecture / Bachelor of Engineering" program (180 ECTS credits).

As part of the online application, you will upload your transcript of records. The relevant Department at the Giessen campus (in this case, Department of Civil Engineering) will check whether your previously completed coursework can be credited. If credit transfer is possible, you will be placed in a higher semester, e.g., the 4th semester.
Semester Placement/Credit Transfer
: To apply for a change of degree program, you must upload your transcript of records or academic performance certificate(s) in digital format (JPG or PDF). The relevant Department determine your semester placement/credit transfer based on the uploaded documents. This semester placement/credit transfer will be carried out by the Department for whose degree program you are applying to study.
Information on re-enrollment
When changing degree programmes, failed attempts are not carried over to the new degree programme.
This does not apply if students deregister from a degree programme at THM and re-enroll in it at a later date.
Upon re-enrollment in the same course of study, all previously completed coursework and failed attempts, including any failed attempts in the meantime, in identical or equivalent preliminary coursework, examinations and partial coursework must be proven to the examination board, even if these were completed at another university or in another course of study.
"General Provisions for Bachelor's Examination Regulations" accordingly for the determination of equivalence
Re-enrollment may be refused in accordance with the Hessian Higher Education Act if, after taking into account all previous failed attempts, it turns out that a study or examination performance required for the Further continuation of studies has definitively been failed.
