The Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen participates in the Dialogue-Oriented Service Procedure (DoSV) of hochschulstart.de. To secure a place in a restricted-admission (NC) Bachelor's degree program, an application is required in advance. Here you will find all the important information regarding the NC application process.
In principle, an application is possible if you have obtained a university entrance qualification in Germany (including qualifications from German schools abroad).
International applicants with a foreign university entrance qualification and persons with a degree from a Studienkolleg (Feststellungsprüfung) should apply via the uni assist online portal.
Application with prior study experience: An application for the first semester is possible if you are not currently enrolled in the requested degree program at a university in Germany. If you are unsure whether you are eligible to apply, please contact the student administration office directly.
Before applying
Do you have any questions about the application process beforehand? This information can help you find answers to those questions.
Entry requirements
To enroll in a Bachelor's degree program at universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschulen) in Hesse, you need one of the following university entrance qualifications:
- General University Entrance Qualification
- Subject-specific university entrance qualification
- a qualification recognized by the Hessian Ministry of Education as equivalent to the university entrance qualification
- University entrance qualification
- a successfully passed university entrance examination for professionally qualified applicants

In Hesse, this qualification, combined with additional vocational experience , qualifies you for admission to universities of applied sciences . Whether your certificate is recognized in Hesse by a resolution of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs is usually indicated by a corresponding note on the certificate. If your certificate only contains a note such as "...this certificate entitles you to study at a university of applied sciences in Baden-Württemberg..." , please submit your certificate to the State School Authority for the Darmstadt-Dieburg district well in advance of your application . There, you can request a certificate confirming the equivalence of your qualification with the Hessian university of applied sciences entrance qualification.
Application deadlines
The following application deadlines apply to NC Degree Courses :
| June 1st to July 15th | for the following winter semester |
| December 1st to January 15th | for the following summer semester |
Selection process
The Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen allocates available study places to applicants according to the order stipulated in the Hessian Higher Education Admissions Ordinance (HHZV). The number of available study places is determined by the Admissions Numbers Ordinance.
Applicants with a prior right to admission admitted or will receive an offer of admission.
Furthermore, the following must be deducted beforehand:
- 10% for international applicants who are not treated equally to German applicants
- 5% for cases of exceptional hardship
- 3% for applicants for a second degree
The remaining study places will be allocated as follows:
- 20% after waiting period
- 80% based on qualifications (university selection process)
Application for a second degree
If you have already completed a degree at a German university at the time of application and already possess the corresponding graduation documents (e.g. Bachelor's certificate and Bachelor's diploma), you can apply for a second degree.
If you receive your final degree documents only after the application deadline, the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen cannot consider you for admission as a second-degree applicant. In this case, please apply for a first-degree program.
Places for a second degree are allocated according to specific criteria. These criteria include the reasons for pursuing a second degree and the examination results achieved in the first degree program. Points are awarded for each criterion, which determine the ranking.
The following documents are also required when applying for a second degree:
- Graduation documents (certificate and transcript) of your successfully completed first degree with the overall grade shown
- Detailed (informal) justification for the necessity of undertaking a second degree, including information on previous education, professional experience, and the desired career goal
You can upload the aforementioned documents at the end of the online application.
Completion of initial studies
The following points are awarded for the examination result of the first degree:
- 4 points for the grades "excellent" and "very good",
- 3 points for the grades "good" and "fully satisfactory",
- 2 points for the grade "satisfactory",
- 1 point for the grade "sufficient"
If the grade of the final examination of the first degree is not provided, the result of the final examination will be assessed with 1 point.
Reason
The following points are awarded for justifying the necessity of a second degree:
- 9 points for "compelling professional reasons"
Compelling professional reasons exist when a profession is being pursued that Degree Courses can only be practiced - 7 to 11 points for "scientific reasons"
Scientific reasons exist if, with regard to later activity in science and research, further scientific qualification in a different course of study is sought on the basis of previous scientific and practical activity. - 7 points for "special professional reasons"
Special professional reasons exist if the professional situation is significantly improved by the fact that the completion of the second degree meaningfully complements the first degree. This is the case if the activity pursued through the second degree in conjunction with the first degree can be seen as a combination of two study-specific fields of activity that cannot normally be pursued by graduates of either Degree Courses , and the person concerned demonstrably aims for this activity. - 4 points for "other professional reasons"
Other professional reasons exist if the second degree is necessary due to the individual situation for other reasons, in particular to compensate for an unreasonable professional disadvantage or to expand the employment opportunities of the activity carried out with the help of the first degree. - 1 point for "none of the aforementioned reasons"
If the second degree is pursued after a family phase for the purpose of reintegration or re-entry into professional life, this can be taken into account by granting an additional bonus of up to 2 points in the calculation of the score.

Coordination phase, prioritization and coordination rules
Coordination phase
After the application deadline, the coordination phase. This means that the universities participating in the DoSV (Dialogue-Oriented Service Procedure) create the applicant ranking lists, publish them on the hochschulstart.de portal, and thus begin allocating study places. THM THM Technical University of Central Hesse) begins allocating study places approximately 1-2 weeks after the application deadline.
e-campus THM . Please follow the instructions in these emails.
Prioritization of applications
When allocating university places, hochschulstart.de primarily considers your preferences. Therefore, it is important that you prioritize your DoSV applications according to your personal preferences. Only through this prioritization can hochschulstart.de offer you the admission that best matches your wishes. Due to the dynamic nature of the process, lower-priority offers are not retained but are eliminated as soon as a higher-priority offer becomes available. Detailed information and a tutorial on prioritization can be found here.
You should prioritize your DoSV applications no later than January 22nd or July 22nd of the respective application semester via the hochschulstart.de application portal. The allocation of university places begins the following day based on various coordination rules that directly influence your applications.
Coordination rules
Coordination rules govern the allocation of study places. Therefore, prioritizing your applications is extremely important. Starting on January 23rd or July 23rd of the respective application semester, offers of admission or direct admissions will be issued based on the coordination rules listed below . The coordination phase ends on February 24th or August 24th of the respective application semester . It is still possible to receive an offer of admission or direct admission until the very last minute. Only after the coordination phase has concluded will you receive a rejection notice if none of your applications were successful.
Rule 1
If there is only one active application in the DoSV (Dialogue-Oriented Service Procedure) and this application is also within the eligible range of the corresponding ranking list, an offer of admission will be issued and immediately converted into an admission.
The application process is then complete, and you can enroll in your desired course of study.
Rule 2
If multiple active applications are received through the DoSV (Dialogue-Oriented Service Procedure) and all applications fall within the eligible range of the corresponding ranking lists, the respective offers of admission will be issued. The highest-priority offer of admission will then be immediately converted into an acceptance.
All other applications will be withdrawn from the application process. The application process is now complete, and you can enroll in your chosen degree program.
Rule 3
If multiple active applications are pending in the DoSV (Delegated Procedure System) and at least two of them are within the eligible category, while other applications are not within this category at that time, the available offers of admission will be issued. The lower-priority offer will then be withdrawn, while the higher-priority offer and the applications not yet within the eligible category will remain.
The application process continues because there are still applications for which offers of admission could potentially be issued. You can either accept the remaining offer yourself and thus end the application process independently, or wait to see if further higher-priority offers of admission are issued to you.
Information on the application status
You will be notified of any status changes to your application via email. Always follow the instructions in this email. Therefore, please check your emails regularly (including your spam folder).
You can check the processing status of your application at any time via your user account in the "E-Campus". Simply log in to your user account. Under "Study Programs - Study Applications", you will find information on the status of each submitted application. Clicking on the respective status will provide you with a more detailed explanation.
You have received an offer of admission: This means that THM has offered you a place in the degree program you applied for. You can accept this offer via the portal hochschulstart.de . Once you have accepted the offer, the letter of admission (PDF document) will be available for download THMapplication portal "E-Campus", you can then accept your place by clicking the " in the THMapplication portal "E-Campus" . In the Apply for enrollment" button . Please note the deadline for submitting your enrollment application. If you miss the deadline, your place will be forfeited and offered to someone else.
Application for enrollment:
By completing the online enrollment process, you have applied for enrollment. At the end of the data entry, you must also upload all required enrollment documents via file upload within the enrollment period. If you prematurely end or interrupt the data entry, the status will be "Enrollment in preparation." You can continue the enrollment process within the enrollment period.
Deferred:
If you cannot accept your place at university due to starting a service obligation (e.g., military or civilian service), you have the option of having your place deferred without obligation. After your service has ended, you can regain your place with "preferential admission." You can apply for deferral via the application portal at hochschulstart.de.
Currently, no offer of admission is possible:
Unfortunately, we cannot offer you a place at our university after the ranking lists were uploaded to the hochschulstart.de portal. You will still have the opportunity to receive an offer of admission or admission later in the coordination phase, provided that THM issues further offers of admission.
Rejected:
An application was rejected because no admission could be determined for the application after the coordination phase. A rejection notice is generated by hochschulstart.de and made available for download on their online portal.
Rejected:
Your application has been rejected from the admissions process. Your application contained formal errors (e.g., missing proof of university entrance qualification) that you failed to rectify by the application deadline. A rejection notice will be issued by hochschulstart.de and made available for download on their online portal.
Coordinated replacement procedure
If, after the coordination phase, there are still study places available for the respective course, THM will allocate these study places via the coordinated clearing procedure of hochschulstart.de.
Who can participate?
Applicants who did not receive admission during the coordination phase can register for the coordinated clearing procedure (KNR). This means that applicants can declare their participation for each individually rejected degree program, provided the university participates in the coordinated clearing procedure for that specific program.
How and when can I register?
At the start of the coordinated waiting list procedure, applicants have 72 hours to declare their intention to participate. Rejected applicants will receive a link via email from hochschulstart.de. Please note: This link will expire after 72 hours or after the aforementioned deadline.
Alternatively, applicants can also declare their participation in the coordinated waiting list procedure directly via the hochschulstart.de application portal in their applicant overview during the aforementioned period. It is not necessary to declare participation via the link.
Registration is possible between February 25th and February 27th or between August 25th and August 27th of each application semester
How does the Coordinated Waiting List (KNR) work?
After the application deadline, the remaining available study places can be allocated. The ranking of applicants from the coordination phase is still taken into account. In the Coordinated Waiting List procedure, the prioritization of participating applications no longer plays a role. As soon as any application participating in the KNR falls within the eligible range, an admission is granted directly, and the waiting list procedure ends for that person.
Further information about the Coordinated Waiting List procedure can be found directly at hochschulstart.de.
Lottery
The lottery procedure is part of the coordinated clearing procedure (KNR) of hochschulstart.de. Study places are allocated by lottery when there are no more applicants on the ranking lists from the coordination phase and there are still free study places available.
Who can participate?
Prospective students who did not receive admission in the previous coordination phase and have not yet applied for a degree program participating in the KNR (Coordination of Student Admissions) can participate.
Complete new applications are also possible. This means that individuals who have not yet applied for the current procedure via hochschulstart.de can participate in the lottery for the coordinated waiting list procedure.
How and when can I register?
New applications can only be submitted via the hochschulstart.de application portal during the entire KNR (Cantonal Student Registration) period. Applications are not accepted via the THM. Registration via hochschulstart.de is required if you have not already registered. Please note: Only one registration per person is permitted on hochschulstart.de!
Registration is possible between February 25th and March 31st, or between August 25th and September 30th of each application semester
The course search function allows users to view all courses participating in the coordinated waiting list procedure.
How does the lottery process work within the coordinated clearing process?
This application is a short application. This means that no documents or other materials need to be uploaded. The application will not be reviewed; the THM. If, for example, it is determined after admission that the applicant does not have a university entrance qualification for the state of Hesse, THM reserves the right to refuse enrollment.
Further information about the lottery process for the coordinated clearing process can be found directly at hochschulstart.de.
