Is my school knowledge sufficient for a degree?
Good knowledge of the natural sciences and mathematics are essential for a successful start to your studies - especially in engineering. But you also need good math skills in many other Degree Courses .
To support your start of studies, the THM offers one-week bridging courses before the actual start of lectures: in mathematics, physics and chemistry. In addition, there are introductory courses in programmeming and scientific work with the Office programmes.
Test your knowledge in the basic subjects and attend the bridging courses! In this way, you can work on missing knowledge and start your studies prepared.

When and where do the bridging courses take place?
Spring semester 2023,
bridge course | date | course location |
programmeming | 13.03.2023 - 17.03.2023 | Gießen |
mathematics | 06.03.2023 - 10.03.2023 | Gießen |
physics | 20.03.2023 - 24.03.2023 | Gießen |
Chemistry | 27.03.2023 - 31.03.2023 | Gießen |
Course times: daily from 9:00 a.m. to approx. 4:00 p.m. (including breaks)
Regardless of their own place of study, first-year students can take part in all bridging courses at the various THM locations.
You will be informed about the rooms by email shortly before the course begins. There are also notices in the THM buildings on the first day of the course. If you have any questions, the InfoCenter at the respective location will help you.
What exactly do I do in the bridging courses?
Bridge course in programmeming
The course provides an introduction to programmeming in Java and is aimed at students who have little or no programmeming experience and are enrolled in a programme where programmeming skills are important.
We will introduce you to the operation of a computer and show you how to create and run simple programmes. The focus is on an initial introduction to algorithmic thinking, which is important for programmeming, and imparting practical skills in using a computer. As part of the course, you can try out what you have learned on computers at the university.
Mathematics bridge course
The basic mathematical knowledge that is required from the beginning of the course in all technical, mathematical-scientific and economic Degree Courses is repeated.
Topics: numbers, sizes - brackets, fractions - proportionality, percentage calculation - equations, powers, roots - logarithms - trigonometry. Examples are discussed and in-depth exercises are worked through.
Bridge course physics
The basic physical knowledge required for all technical and scientific Degree Courses is repeated and, if necessary, reworked. Exemplary physical solution strategies are developed and substantiated, checked and deepened with the help of exercises.
Topics: (SI) units, uniform and accelerated movement, free fall, throws, forces, work, energy, power, vibrations, electricity, a practical experiment.
Bridging course in chemistry
Understanding chemistry right from the start: This course once again systematically summarizes the school knowledge that we require for entry into a technical and scientific degree. Exercises will help you assess and improve. Learn to understand the fundamental experiments and observations that shape our modern worldview.
Bridging course Scientific work with Office products
Dealing with computers and the most important applications is part of the general knowledge of everyday student life and is therefore required in all Degree Courses .
In fact, many students bring superficial knowledge with them, but have difficulties in clearly designing, structuring and implementing content. This leads to considerable additional effort in the creation of content and to results that are often not reusable.
This course imparts in-depth study-related knowledge in dealing with Office products and computer systems in a theoretical introduction and practical exercises on computers at the university.
How do I log on? How high are the costs?
Participation in the bridging courses requires a binding registration at:
https://go.thm.de/anmeldungbrueckenkurse
The registration deadline is always about one week before the course begins.
All courses take place face-to-face. Each course costs 50 euros. Payment for the respective course is made in cash on the first day of the course.
What do students say about their bridging course participation?
"I took the bridging course in programmeming. That was good, because it gave me initial contact with the programmes used during my studies and made it easier for me to get started in the first lecture." Cecilia - Course: Social Media Systems |

"After my A-levels , I studied something completely different before I decided to study at THM . With the bridging courses, I was able to brush up on what I learned at school and felt better prepared for a technical degree, which was noticeable in the first few weeks of the semester."
