It makes sense to apply for BAföG abroad ("Auslands-BAföG") even if you already receive funding through Erasmus+, PROMOS or similar.
Who can apply?
Students who receive domestic BAföG are guaranteed funding via BAföG abroad. Students who do not receive domestic BAföG may still be eligible for funding through the BAföG abroad. Domestic BAföG cannot be taken abroad. You must submit an extra application for BAföG abroad.
Specific information on requirements, funding and application can be found on the website of the student union ("Student Services Organization") (in German), Auslands-BAföG.de (in German) as well as on the website of the German Academic Exchange Service (in English).
- Students who complete 1-2 semesters abroad
- Students doing an internship abroad
- Students who are equivalent to Germans according to § 8 para. 1 number 2ff, para. 2, para. 2a and para. 3 BAföG apply.
- As a rule, funding in the home country is excluded.
What is funded?
- Funding period of up to one year in one country
- the necessary tuition fees (up to 4,600.00 euros)
- Travel expenses (one-off outward & return journey)
- additional health insurance benefits, if applicable
- and for training in another EU country, a foreign supplement that varies according to the country (between 60.00 euros and 255.00 euros per month)
How do I apply?
The application for BAföG abroad should be submitted at least 6 months before the stay abroad. The application is submitted to the Student Services Organization responsible for the host country.
The required forms and the online portal can be found on the website of Auslands-BAföG.de and on the pages of the student union.
