International Health Summer School

This year’s theme of the 2017 International Health Summer School at the VIA University College is how health care technology systems can assist the growing number of people suffering from dementia. Besides addressing the question of how health and welfare technology help people with dementia maintain autonomy in their lives, the summer school takes a look at the ethical side of health technology.

Ljubljana Summer School - Take the Best from East and West


3 July 2017 – 21 July 2017

A Summer School offering several business courses ranging from Business English to Human Resource Management, Macroeconomics and Gamification and Digital marketing. On the weekends (Friday-Sunday) students can go on field trips around Slovenia and neighbouring countries or visit one or two Slovenian companies from various industries or services in different Slovenian regions.

USA Fulbright Summer Institutes 2017


22 July 2017 – 12 August 2017

The Fulbright Commission has announced two summer schools with scholarships available for students of German universities of applied sciences. Both summer schools take place from 22 July to 12 August 2017:

  • Fulbright Summer Institute at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University ("Virginia Tech") in Blacksburg, Virginia with the topic "Communicating Science: Communication, Collaboration, and Connection Across Differences".
  • Fulbright Summer Institute at the Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, Pennsylvania with the topic "American Society and Culture: Reimagining the Rust Belt, Sustainability as a New Tradition".

Namibia Summer University

The Association for the Promotion of the Exchange of European and African Cultural and Educational Matters (VAEA) hosts a yearly summer school with a special focus on the economic ties between southern Africa and Europe. Topics discussed include why the Namibian economy is doing so well in comparison with other African economies and what cultural differences can cause problems.

In 2017 several universities in Eastern Europe, the southern Caucasus region and Central Asia are offering interesting summer schools on various topics. Applications:
Students interested in participating are required to apply both to the foreign university for admission to a summer school and simultaneously to the DAAD for a scholarship.

Fees and Scholarship:
Fees to participate in the courses range from € 600.00 to €1,500.00. Depending on the summer school the fee may or may not include accommodation and food.

The DAAD offers partial scholarships that cover the following:

  • travel expenses (rates differ according to country)
  • scholarship (residence expenses)
  • a maximum amount of €650.00 for reimbursement of participation expenses.

A reasonable personal contribution for expenses is expected from scholarship recipients.

Application deadline:
The foreign university decides on the application deadline and this will also be the deadline for the application for the DAAD scholarship.

Exploring Siberia Winter Edition


11 February – 2 March 2017

Organized by the Irkutsk National Research Technical University, the school is designed for international students with different educational backgrounds and aims to introduce the participants to the specifics of Siberia from political, social, geographical and ecological points of view. The programme includes diverse extracurricular activities like guided tours, museum visits, theatre and a 4-day trip to the heart of Lake Baikal, Olkhon island. ESITC Caen Summer Workshops

For students who have completed three years of higher education in Civil Engineering or a related field our partner institution École supérieure d'ingénieurs des travaux de la construction de Caen (ESITC Caen) offers two summer schools: "Sustainable Building Engineering“ and "Port Engineering and Maritime Works“.

Cross-Cultural Negotiation East/West


7 August – 18 August 2017

Excellent business knowledge, skills on the job and advanced technology are no longer sufficient to effectively compete in the increasing global work environment. In order to successfully deal with various cultures, avoid potential misunderstandings and reach mutual agreements in private and work-related settings, cross-cultural negations skills are essential. The key to successful negotiations lies in the awareness of different cultural behaviours and in the ability to deal with intercultural differences in a positive way.
Offered by the INNES institute in Vienna, this programme examines the key features of integrative and distributive negotiations, such as the Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement (BATNA), Bottom Line (Reservation Point) and creating options. Participants mainly deal with negotiations in Japan, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

GEA College Bootcamp 4 Future Entrepreneurs


3 July – 15 July 2017

This GEA College programme is split into two weeks, and participants can take part in either the first week's activities or both weeks.
During the first week participants are introduced to the entrepreneurial way of thinking, which includes contemporary and popular methods from the following: the collage technique for developing vision; IDEO for generating business ideas; world café workshops to share ideas and to develop them and talking to young Slovenian entrepreneurs who succeeded with crowd funding. Business ideas are validated especially from the market testing standpoint. To prepare for the selected idea an innovative business model is treated in order to communicate to the audience of potential investors by elevator pitch.
The second week deals exclusively with case studies, real business cases and real businesses problem solving. In five days participants visit five successful, fast growing and innovative companies from different industries.
