Here you will find the most important information for a good start to the semester. Many of the following steps build on each other.

ORIENTATION DAYS

Before the start of the semester, the International Office at THM organizes an event called Orientation Days for exchange students. During the Orientation Days, we will support you with starting your studies and answering many administrative questions

  • Registration in the city
  • Opening a bank account
  • Meeting with your Departmental International Coordinator at THM
  • Student Online Services (e.g., timetable)
  • Contact with students at THM

During the orientation days, our team will assist you with all the above-mentioned points. Participation is mandatory for all exchange students.

GERMAN EVENING COURSE DURING THE PLEASE TERM

During the lecture period, you can attend a semester-long German course for exchange students. The evening German course is free of charge for exchange students at THM .

The evening course takes place twice a week during the semester between 6:15 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. (4 teaching hours/week for 3 ECTS credits). THM cooperates with Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) and offers German courses from A1 to C1 for exchange students.

CHIP CARD - STUDENT ID

After your official enrollment at THM , your chip card will be produced. We will contact you as soon as it is ready for collection. The student chip card is your student ID; it displays your matriculation number. The chip card also serves as:

  • Semester ticket: You can use public regional transport in Hesse free of charge
  • Library card: Information on borrowing and ordering media
  • Mensa card: electronic wallet for the canteen and cafeterias
  • Keycard to rooms and buildings of THM
  • Free admission ticket to the Giessen outdoor swimming pool (during the summer semester)
  • Discounted ticket to the Giessen City Theatre

The validity be renewed each semester by inserting the card into one of the update terminals

                                

FOLLOW-UP MEETINGS

After your arrival and start to your studies, we cordially invite you to two follow-up meetings. These meetings will provide an opportunity to promptly discuss any questions you may have regarding topics such as German courses, your new Learning Agreement, exam registration, and any extensions or departures you may have.

During the semester, all checklists and presentations are available to you on the THM learning platform Moodle.

LIFE IN GIESSEN AND FRIEDBERG

Our brochure "Welcome Package" for exchange students provides further information and helpful tips for your daily life, such as shopping, public transport or leisure activities.

       

                                

EXTENSION OF AN EXCHANGE SEMESTER

If you are considering spending another semester at THM as an exchange student, please note the following:

  • Please contact your Departmental International Coordinator at THM in good time to find out which courses you can attend
  • Contact the THM International Office and explain your plans for another semester
  • Ask your home university if you can stay for another semester

Once you have received offers from both universities, prepare a new Learning Agreement with all signatures. Please remember your financing (tuition fees, rent, health insurance, etc.) and renew your lease and visa in good time.

Please contact the International Office by December 1st (in the winter semester) or June 1st (in the summer semester)

                                

DEPARTURE - PREPARE YOUR RETURN

Before you can leave, you still need to complete a few steps to finish your exchange semester:

  • You need to deregister with the city and your health insurance company; you may also need to close your bank account
  • You must return your key and clarify the repayment of your deposit with the student services organization
  • You may need to submit your German course certificate or other proof of achievement to the Department so that your Transcript of Records (ToR) can be fully prepared and all your ECTS credits recorded
  • You must deregister via E-Campus
  • After your final exam, you must contact the THM International Office to obtain a signature on your Confirmation of Departure/Confirmation of Stay

These and all other questions will be clarified in due course at the follow-up meeting. You will also receive a checklist with all the necessary steps there. We are happy to support you.
