BAföG abroad

Students receiving domestic BAföG (German Federal Training Assistance Act) are guaranteed funding through the German Federal Training Assistance Act for studies abroad. Students who do not receive domestic BAföG may still be eligible for funding through the German Federal Training Assistance Act for studies abroad. Domestic BAföG cannot be transferred to studies abroad. You must submit a separate application for German Federal Training Assistance Act for studies abroad.

Specific information on requirements, funding and application procedures can be found on the website of the German National Association for Student Affairs (Deutsches Studierendenwerk), the Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space (Auslands-BAföG.de) and on the website of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

• Students completing 1-2 semesters abroad
• Students completing an internship abroad (mandatory internship, min. 12 weeks)
• Persons treated as equivalent to Germans in accordance with Section 8 Paragraph 1 Number 2ff., Paragraph 2, Paragraph 2a and Paragraph 3 of the Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG) may apply.
• Funding in the home country is generally excluded.

• Funding period of up to one year in one country
• the necessary tuition fees (up to 5,600.00 euros - does not have to be repaid)
• Travel expenses (one-time round trip)
• Possibly additional benefits for health insurance/long-term care insurance
• and for training in another EU country, a foreign allowance varies depending on the country (between 60.00 euros and 255.00 euros per month)

Applications for BAföG (federal student aid) for studies abroad should be submitted at least 6 months before the stay abroad . The application is submitted to the foreign office responsible for the host country
