Studying abroad with a disability

Students with disabilities and/or chronic illnesses and their accompanying persons can complete a semester or internship abroad or participate in short-term mobility, such as a summer school, and can receive special funding.

  • All fields of study are eligible for funding.
  • Credits earned abroad can be recognized towards your studies.

For this purpose, preferably choose one of our European Erasmus+ partner universities, but stays worldwide are also possible (see below)

Some mobility activities can also take place in a so-called virtual or blended format.

  • Virtual mobility: studying online at a partner university from home.
  • blended mobilities: virtual component combined with a short stay of 5-30 days at the partner university.

Erasmus+ financial support

  • Country-dependent, monthly residence allowances (funding amount for the country groups)
  • Subsidy for sustainable travel (Green Travel Top up) up to 6 subsidized sustainable travel days
  • Proven chronic illness or proven disability with additional financial needs or a disability rating of 20 or more
    • additional monthly allowances of a flat rate of €250 (Honorary Declaration Top-ups ( English )) or
    •  DAAD special grant of up to €15,000 per semester or €30,000 per year upon application at least 4 months before the start of the mobility period (financing of additional costs for barrier-free accommodation, travel support, medical care abroad, adaptation of learning materials, an accompanying person, etc.)
  • Funding for preparatory trips

This applies unless these costs are covered by other providers or health insurance after prior review.

Outside of Europe

Stays outside Europe are possible. Please seek individual advice from BliZ and the International Office well in advance
