General questions about stays abroad
How do I plan a stay abroad?
Decide whether you would prefer to study abroad or gain initial international professional experience.
- Studying abroad is advantageous if you can find suitable study programs at the partner university and earn credits abroad that can be credited THM
- An internship is particularly suitable towards the end of your studies. You can complete your practical training/work placement semester at a company abroad and possibly even write your thesis there. Depending on your degree program and specialization, foreign universities or research institutions may also offer internships.
- Short-term stays such as Summer/Winter Schools and RISE research internships offer the opportunity to experience international life during the semester break.
The international exchange and internship coordinators will help you make the right decision. We also strongly recommend attending the information sessions offered by the International Office . You will receive valuable tips and support there.
When is a suitable time for me to go abroad?
It is important that you clarify with the Departmental International Coordinator which semester in your individual study plan is the most suitable for a stay abroad.
Experience shows that stays abroad only make sense from the 3rd semester onwards, or from the 2nd semester of a Master's programme.
For a semester abroad, the winter semester is significantly easier to organize due to differences in the academic calendar. Starting the winter semester is usually straightforward, allowing you to travel to your host university without stress and participate in the mandatory orientation days. However,
if your semester abroad starts in the summer semester, the semester dates can overlap considerably, which is inconvenient. While the winter semester at THM runs until mid-February (including exams), the summer semester at foreign host universities often begins as early as January. This means you either miss the end of the winter semester at THM (exam weeks) or you miss the start of the semester at your host university. The latter is not an option. The start of the semester at your host university is irreplaceable.

Is there a student loan programme for studying abroad?
In principle, it is possible to apply for BAföG (Federal Training Assistance Act) for a period of study or an internship abroad. Students who do not receive domestic BAföG can also apply for BAföG for studies abroad, as it is assumed that studying abroad requires more financial resources. BAföG for studies abroad can be applied for once for a period of 3-12 months and is currently not counted towards the maximum funding period for domestic BAföG, provided that the study abroad period is not a mandatory component of the student's studies at home. However, these regulations change frequently. Detailed advice on BAföG for studies abroad can be obtained from the student services organization responsible for your destination country.
