It makes sense to apply for BAföG abroad, even if you already receive funding from Erasmus+, PROMOS or similar.
Who can apply?
Students who receive domestic BAföG are guaranteed to receive foreign BAföG. Students who do not receive domestic BAföG can still be eligible for funding from the foreign BAföG. Domestic BAföG cannot be taken abroad. You must submit an extra application for BAföG abroad.
Specific information on requirements, funding and application can be found on the website of the student union, Auslands-BAföG.de as well as on the side of German Academic Exchange Service.
- Students who are 1-2 semester abroad graduate
- Students who a Internships abroad graduate
- persons of equal status to Germans apply according to § 8 paragraph 1 number 2ff., paragraph 2, paragraph 2a and paragraph 3 BAföG.
- Funding in your home country is usually excluded.
What is funded?
- Funding period up to one year in one country
- the necessary tuition fees (up to EUR 4,600.00)
- Travel expenses (one-time outward and return journey)
- possibly additional benefits for the health insurance company
- and for an apprenticeship in another EU country, a foreign supplement that varies depending on the country (between EUR 60.00 and EUR 255.00 per month)
How do I apply?
The application for foreign BAföG should at least 6 months before the stay abroad be asked. The application is submitted to the international offices responsible for the host country.
