After arriving in Germany or when moving, all international students (EU and non-EU countries) at the local city office or citizens' office.
Registration is free and must take place no later than one to two weeks after moving (or entering the country). Only after this registration can you apply for or extend your residence permit. The visa is for entry only.
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) provides general information about the requirements, which you must fulfill if you want to study at a German university.
Step 1: Registration in the city
You will need the following to get registered in town:
- Approval of the THM
- passport
- Possibly your rental contract and your "Wohnungsgeberbestätigung" (Confirmation from the Studentenwerk or landlord with your address)
After registering, you will receive a "registration confirmation". You need this document for your residence permit.

Step 2: Apply for your residence permit
You can apply for your residence permit at the immigration office in your city where you live and where you are registered.
You need the following documents:
- Application for a residence permit (available as a file at the Immigration Office)
- Admission from the THM or certificate of enrollment (download yourself from the E-Campus)
- Written confirmationof the costs required to finance the cost of living
- Proof of health insurance

How do I extend my residence permit?
After moving to Germany and enrolling, you received your first residence permit. For the extension you need the same documents as shown in step 2.
- Application for the extension of the residence permit (available as a file at the immigration authorities)
- Current certificate of enrollment, if applicable, overview of achievements (download yourself from E-Campus)
- Written confirmationof the costs required to finance the cost of living
- Proof of health insurance
- You may need a statement from the university. This document is created upon request at the International Office.
Complete the application and submit all required documents.
I need an opinion: what happens now?
The immigration authorities can request a statement, which reports on the status and course of your studies. This can happen several times during the course of study.
This process usually consists of the following steps:
- You apply for an extension of the residence permit. All documents have been completed and submitted to the immigration authorities along with all the necessary documents
- You are waiting for feedback
- if necessary, the foreigners authority will contact the THM and ask for an opinion
- The THM International Office will contact you
- There will be a joint discussion on the study situation (digitally or in person)
- The International Office of the THM sends the statement to the immigration authorities
- You are waiting for feedback from the immigration authorities or a new appointment will be made.

In total you will need from 01.08.2022 at least €934.00 per month. As a rule, you also have to prove this amount for the extension of your residence permit.
