Step 1: Registration in the city

You will need the following documents for registration:

• THM admission
• passport
• Possibly your rental agreement and your "landlord's confirmation" (confirmation from the student union or landlord with your address)

 After registration, you will receive a "registration confirmation". You will need this document for your residence permit.

Step 2: Apply for your residence permit

You apply for your residence permit at the immigration office in your city, where you live and are registered.

You will need the following documents:

• Application for a residence permit (available as a file from the immigration office)
• THM admission or enrollment certificate (downloadable from the e-campus)
• written proof of sufficient funds to cover living expenses
• Proof of health insurance

How do I extend my residence permit?

After moving to Germany and enrolling at university, you received your first residence permit. For its extension, you need the same documents as described in step 2.

• Application for extension of the residence permit (available as a file from the immigration office)
• Current certificate of enrollment, if applicable, transcript of records (downloadable from the e-campus)
• written proof of sufficient funds to cover living expenses
• Proof of health insurance
• You may need a statement from the university. This document will be prepared upon request by the International Office.

I need a statement: What happens now?

The immigration office can request a statement detailing the status and progress of your studies. This can happen several times during your studies.

This process typically proceeds in the following steps:

1. You are applying for an extension of your residence permit. All documents have been completed and submitted to the immigration office along with all necessary supporting documents
2. They are waiting for a response
3. The immigration authorities may contact THM and request a statement
4. The International Office of THM will contact you
5. A joint meeting regarding the study situation will take place (digitally or in person)
6. The International Office of THM will forward the statement to the immigration authorities
7. They are waiting for a response from the immigration office or a new appointment will be arranged.

In total, you will need at least €992.00 per month. You will usually also need to prove this amount to extend your residence permit.
