We would like to offer you some advice and tips on finding accommodation as you begin your studies. It is important to know what types of accommodation are available, what the process is, and what you can do once you have found an apartment or room. You can find this information on finding an apartment or room in Germany here and in more detail in our brochure.
I'm starting my studies. Where can I live?
It's best to start looking for a room or apartment in your university town or the surrounding area before your studies begin. Many students prefer living in student dormitories or in a private room in a shared apartment.
Both options offer quick integration into the local student community. You can improve your language skills and experience student life from different perspectives.
What exactly is a shared apartment (WG)?
A shared apartment is “a group of people who live together as a community (with a shared household) in a house or apartment” (DUDEN).
Shared apartments are very popular with students because costs are reduced by splitting the rent among the roommates. This is not common in many countries, so here you will find information and tips for living in a shared apartment.
What are the advantages of living in a shared apartment?
Price advantage:
Shared apartments are cheaper than small one-room apartments.
Utilities such as water, electricity, rent, and internet are shared.
There are often large common areas (kitchen, living room).
Exchange:
Typical shared apartment life is shaped by the diverse interests and personalities of the residents – for example, cooking together. You
'll have contact with other students and always be in good company.
You and your roommates are there for each other.
Language:
You can improve and actively use your German skills in everyday life.
Experience:
University is one of the most formative periods of your life, creating unforgettable experiences and often lifelong friendships.
Where can I find a shared apartment?
You can find a room in a shared apartment (or other housing offers) on the following Webseite, for example:
https://www.immobilienscout24.de/
It's also worth checking for current shared apartment listings on campus or at university organizations. These are often posted on information boards or bulletin boards with the contact details of the shared apartment.
Ask friends and acquaintances, or check social media, for example, Facebook groups. It's worth searching for groups using keywords like "shared apartment Giessen " or "apartment Friedberg." You can also post your own search there.
Further options for finding shared accommodation can be found in our brochure.
I found a suitable shared apartment ad - what now?
Once you've found a shared apartment that seems suitable, get in touch. Usually by email or WhatsApp. Write a friendly and personal message to the flatmates and introduce yourself. If they find you a good fit and likeable, you'll be invited to a meeting ("flatmate casting") to view the apartment and meet the flatmates.
Further information and sample texts can be found in our brochure.
Can I also live in a student dormitory?
The Studentenwerk Giessen rents out approximately 3,000 dormitory places in various types such as single rooms, single and double apartments or family apartments in Giessen and Friedberg.
To get a room at the Giessen Student Union, an application is required. Since many students usually apply for a room, there is no guarantee that you will get a place and be able to move in quickly.
