In order to sharpen its research profile, the THM has set up interdisciplinary Centres of Competence in its main research areas, the strength of which lies in particular in application-oriented research. The working groups in the Centres of Competence offer young scientists excellent research opportunities and cooperate with other scientists in Germany and abroad as well as with industry.
The organizational framework for the Centres of Competence was created in 2008 Center for Research and Transfer (ZFT). It is responsible for the joint research strategy, fund management and research marketing.
Centre of Competence for Automotive, Mobility and Materials Research (AutoM)
AutoM brings together the expertise of the civil engineering departments (BUILDING), Information Technology-Electrical Engineering-Mechatronics (I.E.M), mechanical engineering, mechatronics, materials technology (M), mechanical engineering and power engineering (ME) and mathematics, science and computing (MND).
Centre of Competence for Biotechnology and Biomedical Physics (BioTecMed)
BioTecMed includes in the field of Life Science Engineering (LSE) and health (TOTAL) the fields of bioprocess engineering and pharmaceutical technology as well as medical physics and biomedical technology.
Centre of Competence for Energy Technology and Energy Management (etem.THM)
etem.THM combines the interdisciplinary competences for energy conversion, energy distribution and energy application from the departments of mechanical engineering and energy technology (ME), Electrical and Computer Engineering (EGG) as well as information technology, electrical engineering and mechatronics (I.E.M).
Centre of Competence for Information Technology (KITE)
KITE conducts applied research and development on artificial intelligence or machine learning and IT security. It combines expertise from the fields of health ( TOTAL), mathematics, natural sciences and data processing (MND) and mathematics, natural sciences and computer science (MNI).
Centre of Competence for Laser, Optics, optical Technology and Systems (LOTuS)
at Lotus all R&D work from the field of optics and optical technologies in the departments of information technology, electrical engineering and mechatronics (I.E.M) and mathematics, science and computing (MND) and the Optics Center Wetzlar, which conducts application-oriented research on optics technologies with cooperating regional optics companies.
Centre of Competence for Nanotechnology and Photonics (NanoP)
NanoP includes electrotechnical research across the entire spectrum from nanoelectronics to aerospace electronics and combines expertise from the fields of electrical engineering and information technology (EGG), Information Technology-Electrical Engineering-Mechatronics (I.E.M), as well as mechanical engineering and energy technology (ME).
Centre of Competence for Economy and Management Science (WuMS)
at WuMS the interdisciplinary skills and expertise from the fields of business (W), Industrial engineering (WI) and management and communication (MuK) summarized and bundled.
Centre of Competence for Sustainable Engineering and Environmental Systems (ZEuUS)
ZEUS examines the technical and systemic connections between the fields of competence energy and environment as a coalition of professors and engineers from the fields of civil engineering (BUILDING), Life Science Engineering (LSE) as well as mechanical engineering, mechatronics, materials technology (M).
