To sharpen its research profile, THM has set up interdisciplinary centres of competence, the strengths of which lie particularly in applied research. The research groups in the centres of competence offer outstanding research opportunities to junior academics and provide opportunities to cooperate with colleagues at home and abroad and with business.
The Centre for Research and Transfer (ZFT), founded in 2008, created the organisational framework for the centres of competence. It is responsible for the overall research strategy, administration of funding and research marketing.
Centre of Competence for Automotive, Mobility and Materials Research (AutoM)
AutoM makes advances at the cutting edge of application-based development and testing of new materials and digital production processes and brings together expertise from the Departments of Architecture and Civil Engineering (BAU), Information Technology-Electrical Engineering-Mechatronics (IEM), Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Materialstechnology (M), Mechanical Engineering and Energy Technology (ME) and Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Data Processing (MND).
Centre of Competence for Biotechnology and Biomedical Physics (BioTecMed)
BioTecMed in the departments of Life Science Engineering (LSE) and Health Sciences (GES), BioTecMed comprises the fields of bio-process technology and pharmaceutical technology, medical physics and biomedical technology.
Centre of Competence for Energy Technology and Energy Management (etem.THM)
etem.THM brings together interdisciplinary expertise in energy conversion, energy distribution and energy application from the Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Energy Technology (ME), Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (EI) and Information Technology, Electrical Engineering and Mechatronics (IEM).
Centre of Competence for Information Technology (KITE)
KITE is involved in applied research into and development of artificial intelligence, machine learning and IT security. The centre of competence combines expertise from the Departments of Health Sciences (GES), Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Data Processing (MND) and Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Informatics (MNI).
Centre of Competence for Laser, Optics, optical Technology and Systems (LOTuS)
LOTuS brings together all the research and development work in the areas of optics and optical technologies in the departments of Information Technology-Electrical Engineering (IEM), Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Data Processing (MND), and of the Optics Center in Wetzlar which conducts application-oriented research on optical technologies together with cooperating regional optics companies.
Centre of Competence for Nanotechnology and Photonics (NanoP)
NanoP covers electrotechnical research across the entire range from nano-electronics through to aerospace electronics and brings together expertise from the Departments of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (EI), Information Technology-Electrical Engineering-Mechatronics (IEM) and Mechanical Engineering and Energy Technology (ME).
Centre of Competence for Economy and Management Science (WuMS)
WuMS combines the interdisciplinary competences and expertise from the fields of economics (W), industrial engineering (WI) and management and communication (MuK).
Centre of Competence for Sustainable Engineering and Environmental Systems (ZEuUS)
ZEuUS engages with the current research and development issues in the topic areas of energy and the environment in the form of an interdisciplinary team of academics and engineers from the Departments of Architecture and Civil Engineering (BAU), Life Science Engineering (LSE) and Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Materialtechnology (M).
