Graduates in energy technology are experts in the energy transition. The secure and sustainable supply of heat, electricity, and fuels, as well as the efficient end-use of energy, are the key global issues of this century. Therefore, graduates are prepared to assume responsibility for developing sustainable technical concepts for the provision, distribution, and application of energy. As specialists, they actively shape the future of energy supply and develop viable solutions. Developing a sustainable energy supply requires systems thinking to unlock synergies while constantly weighing the technical, economic, and environmental aspects against each other.
The program allows students to specialize in one of three areas: energy systems, energy economics & energy management , or building energy and building services engineering (TGA). Each area of specialization focuses on different application areas of a sustainable energy supply.
Whether energy efficiency, renewable energies, hydrogen technology or sustainable building energy supply - all focus areas convey interdisciplinary content from the various classic engineering disciplines.

Study content
The Energy Technology program offers students a foundational, career-qualifying Bachelor's degree. This interdisciplinary program culminates in the academic degree of Bachelor of Engineering. The Energy Technology program builds upon a broad spectrum of fundamental engineering and natural science subjects and combines these with modern, career-oriented specializations.
Foundation studies: Support for starting your studies and flexibility
To make your start at university easier, we support you in your first semester with an introductory seminar and a mentoring program. If you are unsure whether you are already well-prepared for a successful engineering or science degree, our new GetINGstarted program more time and additional support to help you get started.
In the first three semesters, modules in engineering, such as mathematics, physics/chemistry, mechanics, materials science, technical thermodynamics and electrical engineering, lay the foundations for a successful engineering degree.
Switching between Bachelor's Degree Courses within the Department of ME is possible without loss of time until the beginning of the 4th semester. Specialization areas are also determined at this time.
Many first-year students already know at the start of their studies which of our three Degree Courses they want to specialize in. Some first-year students change their minds during during your studies foundational studies, as they then have a better understanding of their academic preferences. Specialization areas are also determined at this point. This gives you maximum flexibility in shaping your studies at our Department .
Advanced phase: Modern and application-oriented
The degree program covers all essential topics in modern energy technology while allowing for individualized study plans that take personal interests and goals into account. The later semesters are characterized by in-depth, application-oriented courses in the two areas of specialization. Since the modules build upon one another, the acquired knowledge is continually revisited, applied to new challenges, and expanded upon.
The practical relevance of the study program is supported by:
- Professionally oriented forms of assessment: carrying out project work in teams, writing project reports, presentations/lectures, colloquia
- Numerous laboratory practicals and excursions
- Cooperation between the institutes of the Departments of ME and companies in research projects
- Opportunities for student participation in the projects of the institutes of the Departments ME
- Practical work experience in a company
- Writing the bachelor thesis in a company
The program is further enhanced by a diverse Elective component. In addition to subject-specific courses, students also develop interdisciplinary soft skills (teamwork, social competence, technical English, etc.) that are increasingly in demand in the professional world. By choosing relevant topics for project work, practical placements, and the bachelor's thesis, you can further specialize within your chosen areas of focus.
Study program
The following is a list of the courses offered in this degree program. The numbers indicate the weekly contact hours (SWS) or the credit points you will receive for successful completion of the course. A total of 210 credit points must be earned. You can find information about the content of each course in the module handbook.

After completing all courses, a three-month practical training phase typically follows in the 7th semester. During this time, aspiring engineers have the opportunity to independently work on a topic from a technical and scientific perspective within a business environment and apply the knowledge they have acquired during their studies. We at the Department of Mechanical Engineering are always available to provide support in selecting and securing suitable internship positions. |

Key areas
Energy systems
The Energy Systems specialization imparts the competence to understand, plan, and operate technical energy systems as a whole. Within this specialization, students focus on technologies and processes for supplying energy to various technical systems.
Such a system can be a single energy conversion machine (such as a combined heat and power plant, a heat pump or a solar thermal power plant), a single industrial or commercial enterprise or a combination of the aforementioned systems (e.g., a combination of combined heat and power plants and biomass combustion plants supplies a commercial enterprise with heat, cooling and electricity).
Solving such an energy supply challenge requires thinking systemically, unlocking synergies, and constantly weighing the technical, economic, and ecological aspects against each other.

Building energy and supply technology (TGA)
The focus on building energy and supply technology (TGA) imparts the skills to plan and analyze buildings holistically with regard to energy and information flows, to optimize the building services engineering and to evaluate them economically and ecologically.
One of the greatest potentials for energy savings lies in increasing the energy efficiency of buildings. Here, the desire for low operating costs meets the desire for thermal comfort in living and working environments.
The living room should be pleasantly warm at the right time, the bedroom nice and cool, the blinds should adjust according to the weather or time of day, and the heating system should ideally utilize solar energy, perhaps even generating electricity at the same time. All types of buildings need to be heated or cooled, and pollutants must be removed from the indoor air. The right system technology always interacts with user behavior and seasonal environmental influences.

Career prospects
Perspectives
Graduates of the Energy Technology program plan and analyze complex energy and media supply systems. They develop specialized system components and oversee the construction, commissioning, and technical operation of energy and media supply systems. They also plan and optimize building services engineering (BSE) systems such as heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, or work in product management and sales of sophisticated energy and heating technology products. This results in a wide range of potential employers.
Our energy technology program is particularly practice-oriented: We want our students to transition smoothly into the job market after graduation. Our experience confirms this: Even during periods of economic downturn, our graduates have no problem finding attractive jobs after their studies – including in the Giessen region!
Our students often get to know their future employers during their practical training or while working on their bachelor's thesis. And it's not uncommon for these companies to then even support the students financially during their master's studies (e.g., by offering them a position as a working student).
