The dual Bachelor's degree program in Engineering - Mechanical Engineering enables students to apply and implement engineering methods for solving diverse problems in mechanical engineering, in order to plan, develop and produce technical systems in their respective field.

The degree program builds upon a broad spectrum of fundamental engineering and natural science subjects and combines these with modern, career-oriented specializations in general mechanical engineering, design engineering, hygiene design, and refrigeration and air conditioning technology. The first three semesters focus on classic fundamental modules of mechanical engineering, such as mathematics, physics/chemistry, mechanics, materials and manufacturing technology, design, and thermodynamics. The later semesters are characterized by in-depth, application-oriented courses in the respective specialization.

Studies

Graphic showing the timeline of the Bachelor's degree program

In the three-and-a-half-year dual Bachelor's degree program, theory (at the university) and practice (during the time spent at the company) alternate. The program begins with an introductory phase in August, during which students become familiar with the company and its operations and processes. Lectures for the first semester begin in October. Practical phases place after the first, second, and third semesters. Following the fourth semester, the fifth semester offers the opportunity for individual specialization or a semester abroad. The sixth semester is followed by project-based learning. Apart from two-day theory modules at StudiumPlus, students work at their partner company, tackling larger projects. The seventh semester begins with the practical component of the thesis at the company. This is followed by theoretical block modules at the university. In the final month of the program, students prepare for the colloquium, which takes place at the end of the studies, while working at the company.

Digital Elective module

The Elective modules of the 5th semester of the dual Bachelor's degree program in Mechanical Engineering (B.Eng.) are generally held as virtual courses. These are conducted live according to the regular timetable via a video conferencing system.

StudiumPlus is an innovative dual study program. It is backed by three strong partners: the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (THM), the largest university of applied sciences in Hesse; the Competence Center for Dual Studies StudiumPlus e. V. (CCD), which unites over 950 partner companies and institutions; and the Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Central Hesse, led by the Lahn-Dill Chamber of Industry and Commerce.

Specializations

The field of General Mechanical Engineering encompasses the areas of design and industrial production, i.e., the methods involved in creating a product. Students learn to find answers to complex engineering questions. They are empowered to apply and implement engineering methods to solve diverse problems in general mechanical engineering, enabling them to plan, develop, and produce technical systems in their respective fields. The simulation of the mechanical behavior of components and automation technology, as a cross-cutting subfield of engineering, complete the curriculum.

The field of refrigeration and air conditioning technology trains mechanical engineers specifically for this area. This encompasses everything from air conditioning system construction and various cooling technologies to heating system construction. Important and contemporary topics covered within this specialization include the design and implementation of climate chambers, where experiments can be conducted under very specific temperature conditions for research purposes. Furthermore, the field of refrigeration and air conditioning technology would be inconceivable today without the integration of renewable energies.

Hygiene design is a sub-discipline of special-purpose machine construction. Particularly in the food and pharmaceutical industries, machines, systems, and components must be designed and built according to the highest hygiene standards. This specialization teaches design principles that avoid structural weaknesses that could promote hygiene-related hazards. Key aspects of hygiene design include ensuring that materials, surfaces, and structural elements are easy to clean and that the microbiological conditions for germ formation and bacterial growth are addressed.
