Midwives use their expertise to support women throughout pregnancy, childbirth, the postpartum period, breastfeeding, and the transition to family life. They work in small and large teams as well as independently.

A federal law that came into force in 2020 reformed midwifery training in Germany and made the academicization of the qualification pathway the standard. From now on, midwives are to be trained within the framework of dual-track Degree Courses .

The full-time dual study program in midwifery science was jointly developed by the Department Health at the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen, the Department of Medicine at the Justus Liebig University Giessen , and, as the responsible practical training institution, the University Hospital Giessen and Marburg GmbH (UKGM) site Giessen.

Studies

The study of midwifery science consists of a practical and a university-level study component, which is reflected in an alternation between practical and theoretical phases.

The study program comprises theoretical study units; practical placements at the University Hospital Giessen and Marburg (UKGM) Giessen campus, with freelance midwives, in midwife-led outpatient facilities, and in other institutions suitable for the outpatient practical training of midwives; the bachelor's thesis with colloquium; and the state examination. During the practical component of the program, students are enabled through practical placements to relate, connect, and deepen the competencies acquired in the theoretical and practical courses.

For the dual Bachelor's degree program in Midwifery Science, a preliminary internship of a total of 200 hours is strongly recommended.

The following is a list of courses. The numbers indicate for each semester how many hours per week or how many credit points are allocated to the respective subject.
