The Master's program in Optotechnology and Image Processing offered by the Departments of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FB MN) at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences and the Departments of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Data Processing (FB MND) at the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen is a 3-semester cooperative study program and a Further of the consecutive Bachelor's degree in Optotechnology and Image Processing or Physical Engineering at the respective universities.

Studies

The Master's program in Optotechnology and Image Processing (OBV) is an interdisciplinary program that builds upon the concept of the OBV diploma program offered by Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences since 1997. "Optotechnology" encompasses all optical technologies, as described, among other things, in the "German Agenda for Optical Technologies for the 21st Century" published by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), with a focus on classical technical optics, optical metrology, and laser technology. "Image processing" refers to the acquisition and processing of image data for industrial and scientific applications.

The Master's program in Optical Vision (OBV) is application-oriented, aiming for in-depth study and specialization. It offers a rigorous theoretical foundation in fields such as the systems theory of optotechnology and image processing, laser physics, and image processing algorithms (e.g., 3D image processing), while simultaneously providing an in-depth introduction to current and dynamic fields such as machine vision, micro-optics, and laser applications. The integrated teaching of optotechnology and image processing fosters systems thinking and creates a cross-disciplinary professional qualification.

The courses in the Master's program are divided into modules. Credit points are awarded for successful participation. A total of 90 credit points must be earned.

1st semester: Laser physics, application and development of optical systems, applied image processing, system theory of optics, system theory of image processing

2nd semester: Laser technology, micro-optics, machine vision, image processing algorithms, technical Electivemodule, interdisciplinary Electivemodule

3rd semester: Master module

The Technical Elective module offers, for example, the following courses:

  • Laser applications in medicine & medical technology
  • 3D image processing
  • Robot Vision
  • Further advanced image processing algorithms
  • Real-time image processing
  • Spectral Imaging
  • Fiber optic sensors

Career prospects

The demand for graduates with balanced knowledge in both subfields, optotechnology and image processing, at an applied scientific level is very high. Graduates will be qualified for management positions and (the best) for doctoral studies.

Graduates of the Master's program should be able to work independently in a scientific manner. They systematically analyze complex problems and consistently solve them using modern software.
