Study doubts or discontinuation

It's a topic that no one likes to talk about, yet statistically it's one of the most common concerns in the students advisory service at THM .

  • "At the beginning of my studies I failed a few exams and now I don't feel like going to exams anymore. I can't motivate myself to study either and I simply don't believe that I'll be able to finish my studies."
  • "I'm facing the last attempt and I don't know what will happen if I don't pass it. Am I not allowed to continue studying at all? I really don't know what to do then."
  • “Sometimes I think to myself, my studies don't suit me at all. I would rather study something else or maybe do an apprenticeship, but then I have this kink in my CV and my parents don't know anything about it either. In addition, you always have this feeling of having failed somehow.”

Perhaps you have already had these or similar thoughts. That's not unusual either, it can always happen that you have doubts about yourself and your field of study during your studies. But if these doubts don't go away or even get bigger over time, then this also has an impact on the success of your studies. In the worst case, the doubts are so great that one no longer sees any point in studying and there is a risk of dropping out. Now is the time to get help!
The Advisors of the central students advisory service can help in this case professionally and confidentially. In a personal conversation you can get advice on the subject of dropping out of studies, alternatives and crisis management. We work neutrally and open-ended. Together we look at the current situation and options for action and clarify questions such as e.g.:

  • What happens if I have to drop out of my studies? What options and alternatives do I have?
  • What really suits me? Should I study something else or do an apprenticeship?
  • What can I do to better organize my studies? How can I cope better with exams? Where can I get help?
  • How many doubts are ok, when should I look for alternatives? And how does that even work?

You are welcome to contact us for these and many other concerns. Just arrange an appointment!

In addition, the central students advisory service offers an information event every semester in cooperation with the university team of the Federal Employment Agency in Gießen . In addition to the topics mentioned, you can also find out about alternatives to studying there. The respective event can be found in Semester programme of the university team or in THM event calendar.
