By equalizing the basic course by two semesters, you can, for example, compensate for a gap in previous technical knowledge or catch up on missing practical experience. You will be supported by tutorials, personal advice, mentoring, accompanied practical projects and exam preparation.

Interview with two students
Felix Baum and Joscha Schmidt make a relaxed impression. "All exams passed." The first semester could have gone worse.
The two are studying electrical engineering and information technology in Gießen, albeit in a variant that the THM has been offering since last year. "GettING Started" is the name of the programme in which the first year of study is two years long and the entire bachelor's degree therefore lasts nine instead of seven semesters.
This reduces the pace of study in favor of an intensive deepening of the course content. This is intended to improve study success and reduce the dropout rate while maintaining the high level of training. In addition to the regular events, the participants attend additional compulsory courses in mathematics and electrical engineering, in which they are supported by tutors.
"What you normally do at home, i.e. the preparation and follow-up work, we do with the tutors in the additional courses," explains Joscha Schmidt. "And you can really learn something in a group of ten people." The "Get-Lab" electrical engineering laboratory, in which students work on practical projects in teams and learn what they will need the theoretical basics for, has also been well received.
The programme also includes an introductory seminar. The focus here is on independence, communication, teamwork and time management. "Lots of tips on how to start your studies well," he received here, says Felix Baum. The participants could also have written a mock exam.
"Highly recommended" is their unanimous verdict on GettING Started after the first semester. The two of them are certain that they would have completed their studies in the conventional way, "but not as relaxed". "You don't have this initial stress," reports 21-year-old Joscha Schmidt. "I came from an apprenticeship as an electronics technician for industrial engineering. With GettING Started, the transition to studying is easier." Felix Baum started studying at the technical high school right after completing A-levels . "Maths and physics are just difficult," is his argument for the study variant with a reduced pace. In addition, according to the 19-year-old pragmatically, "you simply have more free time". The two travel together every day from Eschenburg-Hirzenhain near Dillenburg. Not having to get up between five and six every day was an additional argument.
GettING Started ensures a special sense of community and faster settling in and organizing in the new university system. The first exam results of the students indicate a positive effectiveness of this measure.
In addition to electrical engineering and information technology in Gießen , the Degree Courses in general electrical engineering and communications engineering and computer networks in Friedberg also offer the GettING-Started variant. The Hessian Ministry for Science and Art supports the project. The universities in Darmstadt and Fulda are also testing models for studying at reduced speeds.
